Roma in the race for Sofiane Boufal

Roma in the race for Sofiane Boufal Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal is reportedly a summer target for Serie A giants Roma. The Moroccan international has been training with Saints’ Under-23 squad in recent times following an alleged bust-up with manager Mark Hughes, who claimed that Boufal had “made a mistake”. Having signed for £16m in the summer of 2016, Boufal has not fulfilled his potential on the South Coast and it seems that regardless of which division the club is in next season, he is headed for the exit door. Italian news source Calciomercato claim that Inter Milan and OGC Nice are keen, which has previously been reported, but also state that Champions League semi-finalists Roma are pondering a move for the player. Boufal has scored two goals for Saints in what has been a frustrating season for the player, but it seems his nightmare tenure at St Mary’s Stadium could come to an abrupt end in the summer.

Sofiane Boufal has suffered late heartbreak ahead of the World Cup this summer, with Morocco excluding him from their 23-man squad for the tournament in Russia next month.

Boufal has endured a testing past couple of months having been exiled from Saints’ first-team plans and banished to training with the Under-23 side. This came after a dispute was revealed between him and interim Southampton boss Mark Hughes.

The Southampton attacker was once a prominent feature in the Morocco squad but after a torrid season in England, he has been dropped from international contention.

Mark Hughes backed by increased support from Saints squad

Mark Hughes backed by increased support from Saints squad Mark Hughes has been backed by the progressive support from the Southampton squad, according to the Telegraph. Hughes is only contracted to Saints until the end of the season, having signed a deal on an interim basis. However, it appears as though a number of the players in his squad have backed him to continue as the club’s manager for the foreseeable future. The Welshman was appointed by the club’s board after the decision to sack Mauricio Pellegrino was taken in March, following a 3-0 away defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League. Hughes has since made a difference to proceedings at Southampton, helping the team to play with greater freedom and aiding them in their bid to avoid the drop down to the Championship. Saints are currently sat in 17th place and outside of the relegation zone based only on goal difference. On Tuesday, they face a crunch clash at the bottom of the table as they face Swansea City, who are level on points with them. It’s stated in the report that Hughes has instilled a more focused mentality in first-team training, whilst also implementing more intense procedures for the squad to follow ahead of important matches.

Morocco announced their 23-man squad on Thursday with no sign of Boufal, inflicting further damage on the former Lille man’s reputation.

Boufal confirmed earlier on in the week to the French media that he is keen to leave St Mary’s Stadium this summer and it appears as though he is intent on returning to Ligue 1.

The winger is not named in Morocco’s standby list, either, indicating that there is no chance of him jetting off to Russia with his fellow countrymen in June.

Southampton join chase for Shaqiri .
Southampton are one of a number of clubs tracking Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri. following his side’s relegation to the Championship, according to Talksport. The player is looking for a move away and Saints new boss Mark Hughes is keen to bring the player to St Mary’s having worked with him when the pair were at Stoke. Shaqiri has admitted that he is keen to get his future sorted prior to the World Cup getting underway, where he is expected to play a key role for Switzerland. The Saints face tough competition for his signature from fellow Premier League sides, Everton and Tottenham as they look to improve their squad after a tough campaign last season. It is widely expected that it will take a large sum to sign the player after a fine season at Stoke, but he was unable to prevent them from getting relegated to the Championship.
