The Northern Echo claims that the former Real Madrid boss is under consideration. The Spanish Football Federation have taken the bold decision to sack Lopetegui just one day before the World Cup kicks off. Spain have taken the bold decision to sack their manager Julen Lopetegui just a day before the World Cup kicks off in Russia.

Lopetegui was recently confirmed as the next Real Madrid boss earlier this week and the early announcement has backfired.

The 51-year-old will replace Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu this summer following the Frenchman’s decision to step down.

The Spanish Football Federation have taken the decision to part ways early rather than wait until after the tournament, despite Spain playing their first game of the competition on Friday against Portugal.

Twitter: ¡Bienvenido, @julenlopetegui! #WelcomeLopetegui | #RealMadrid https://t.co/i2efGU0JI3 (@realmadrid) Lopetegui had signed a new contract agreeing to remain with the national side until 2020 in May, but having been announced as Zinedine Zidane’s successor on at Los Blancos, he was relieved of his post on Wednesday morning in a remarkable turn of events. After flying to the Spanish camp in Russia late on Tuesday, head of the Spanish FA Luis Rubiales confirmed Lopetegui’s departure in a press conference on Wednesday. Per The Guardian, Rubiales was quoted as saying: “We have been forced to dispense with the national coach. We wish him the greatest of luck. The negotiations have occurred without any information to the Spanish FA and we were informed just five minutes before the press release. There’s a way to act that needs to be fulfilled.” Assistant coach Pablo Sanz remains with the team for the time being, as does sporting director and former Real Madrid and Bolton defender Fernando Hierro, either of whom could replace Lopetegui for the tournament. It remains to be seen how the departure will affect the team’s play, however, in what could be a huge blow to the chances of one of the tournament favourites.

Marco Asensio responds to speculation linking him with move to Liverpool .
Marco Asensio has responded to the reports linking him with a move to Liverpool and has revealed that he will hold talks with new Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui after the World Cup to discuss his future. Asensio is one of the fastest rising stars in European football and reports last week claimed that Liverpool were ready to spend a club record fee of over £100m in order to sign him. Whilst the story about a supposed bid from the Reds seems to have little substance to it, Liverpool are likely to be interested in such a good player and they may have been given a slight boost after the 22-year-old did not rule out the possibility of a summer move. When asked about Liverpool’s interest in him, Asensio said: “Liverpool? When the World Cup is over, we’ll talk about that sort of thing, now I’m focused on selection.” He then went on to say that he’ll hold talks with Lopetegui after the World Cup to discuss his future. “I’m glad Julen has signed up for Real Madrid, after the World Cup we’ll talk things over with him.
