2018 World Cup Tactical Preview: Spain

2018 World Cup Tactical Preview: Spain Entering the tournaments as one of the favourites, Spain still have the majority of their old core together, which gives them an advantage over many teams. Although Julen Lopetegui has replaced Vicente del Bosque since the Euros, not too much has changed for Spain. They still play a 4-3-3 with an emphasis on keeping possession and tiring the opposition out. Their key player is David Silva, as he pulls the strings in the final third and is usually the one making key passes. The System: Spain still play a 4-3-3 system with four controlling midfielders in the form of Thiago Alcantara, Andres Iniesta, David Silva and Sergio Busquets. The fifth midfielder is the one that rotates, with Lopetegui sometimes opting to go with Isco and overload the centre of the pitch. On other occasions, though, he opts for Pedro. The Chelsea winger didn’t make the squad, and it looks as if Rodrigo and Lucas Vazquez are the wide options for Spain at the World Cup. I personally expect Spain to play Isco wide right but in a system like theirs, positions do not really matter. They control the ball and play with such fluidity that outside of the full-backs, players will end up in different areas at any given time. Jordi Alba and Dani Carvajal will need to provide a lot of width, but Spain have been used to relying on them to do this, so it shouldn’t be a problem. The striker is really the only position with any kind of divide in the Spanish media.

With Spain’s World Cup in full crisis mode after the sacking of their coach Julen Lopetegui just 48 hours before the tournament starts, his last words to the squad have now emerged.

The 51-year-old was announced as the new Real Madrid coach on Tuesday, with Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales apparently only learning about it five minutes before it came out.

Spain's 23-man World Cup squad confirmed

Spain's 23-man World Cup squad confirmed Spain, the 2010 World Cup winners, are coming into this tournament with very high hopes. Legends such as Carlos Puyol, Xavi and Iker Casillas have all came to the end of their international careers and a new crop of Spanish tiki taka footballers are on their way. After a disappointing Euro 2016, head coach Vincente Del Bosque resigned, leaving a vacancy for new manager Julen Lopetegui, who named his 23 man squad earlier this week. Most of the Spanish squad basically picks itself. The winners such as Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta are still very much the spine of the team. However, this Spanish squad has a lot of young quality. The likes of Marco Asensio, Saul Ninguez and Lucas Vazquez have all had positive seasons in Madrid. Furthermore, there are a few “not sure” players. Liverpool flop Iago Aspas was given the green light ahead of Alvaro Morata after a good campaign with Celta Vigo, as was Valencia forward Rodrigo. Another shock name to the list was Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal, who was picked ahead of Marcos Alonso, Real Sociedad right back Alvaro Odriozola, who has been named ahead of Alonso and Hector Bellerin, rounds off the 23-man selection for Spain. This squad wil suit playing the typical Spanish, keep ball way. There isn’t a lot of pace through out the side, but hopefully, Lopetegui can show why he was given the job and find a system that works with an incredibly talented 23 man squad.

" Lopetegui will be the coach of the first team during the next three seasons." The short statement also added that the Basque will take up his role after the World Cup, which starts on Thursday and finishes on July 15, with Spain among the favourites to reach the final in Moscow. Spain considering Premier League boss as Lopetegui replacement

Spain considering Premier League boss as Lopetegui replacement Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is on the list of candidates to replace the recently-sacked Spain manager Julen Lopetegui. The Northern Echo claims that the former Real Madrid boss is under consideration. The Spanish Football Federation have taken the bold decision to sack Lopetegui just one day before the World Cup kicks off. The news follows the confirmation that Lopetegui will be taking over at Real Madrid this summer. Following the announcement, there has been contrasting reports about Lopetegui’s future with the Spanish national team, but his departure has now been confirmed. This is not the first time Benitez has been linked with the Spain job. He was a target for the national team when Vicente del Bosque left his post back in 2016. Lopetegui’s departure will throw fresh doubt over Benitez’s immediate future with Newcastle. Benitez has been linked with moves away from St James’ Park following the difficult relationship he has endured with Mike Ashley.

Marco Asensio responds to speculation linking him with move to Liverpool .
Marco Asensio has responded to the reports linking him with a move to Liverpool and has revealed that he will hold talks with new Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui after the World Cup to discuss his future. Asensio is one of the fastest rising stars in European football and reports last week claimed that Liverpool were ready to spend a club record fee of over £100m in order to sign him. Whilst the story about a supposed bid from the Reds seems to have little substance to it, Liverpool are likely to be interested in such a good player and they may have been given a slight boost after the 22-year-old did not rule out the possibility of a summer move. When asked about Liverpool’s interest in him, Asensio said: “Liverpool? When the World Cup is over, we’ll talk about that sort of thing, now I’m focused on selection.” He then went on to say that he’ll hold talks with Lopetegui after the World Cup to discuss his future. “I’m glad Julen has signed up for Real Madrid, after the World Cup we’ll talk things over with him.
