Cardinals activate Carlos Martinez, Yadier Molina from disabled list The Cardinals are one of four teams trying to make the postseason in the jam-packed NL Central.Martinez is slated to return to the Cardinals' rotation Tuesday against the Marlins after needing a little more than three weeks to recover from a right lat strain. He only needed 63 rehab innings.

But what about David Johnson ? Is keeping the star running back, coming back from a bad wrist, more about saving him for 2018? Keim said no. GM Steve Keim was , like Bruce Arians, satisfied with the effort from the Cardinals Sunday in a loss to the Rams, but noted that the execution “on all three

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim doesn't seem worried that running back David Johnson will remain a holdout.

Johnson hasn't attended mandatory minicamp as he waits for a new contract, but there has been talk that the Cardinals are working on an extension.

Keim indicated that was the case, saying he expects Johnson to be on the field come September.

“I don’t think there is any question David is one of our core players and someone we look forward to having a long-term future with,” Keim said, via the team’s website. “[It’s] no different from in the past, when we’ve rewarded players like Pat Peterson, Chandler Jones, Larry Fitzgerald, Carson Palmer, just to name a few. There’s no doubt in my mind moving forward that we will keep a positive outlook and again, look forward to rewarding him just like we have players in the past.”

Alex Reyes injury update: Cardinals' top prospect out 6 months with torn lat tendon

Alex Reyes injury update: Cardinals' top prospect out 6 months with torn lat tendon Reyes came back for one start with the Cardinals after recovering from Tommy John surgery, but now he's out for another six months. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in February 2017 and missing a year in recovery, Reyes made it back to MLB for a start last week. Recently on vacation, a person walked up to #AZCardinals GM Steve Keim and introduced himself. But with Peterson, league sack leader Chandler Jones, Honey Badger™ Tyrann Mathieu, and (a healthy) David Johnson , the Cardinals have more talent than most NFL squads.

“I’m definitely staying aware but I don’t know what ( GM ) Steve Keim and (president) Mike Bidwill are thinking,” Johnson said on the PFT PM podcast. Mar 23, 2018: Fantasy Football Rankings 2018: Early List of Top Players and Sleepers – f1tym1. Apr 3, 2018: Cardinals RB David Johnson cleared

Johnson is scheduled to make $1.9 million in 2018 and expects to get a raise by the start of the season.

But there has been the argument since he missed last season with a broken wrist, he shouldn't get an extension just yet.

There is also the issue of free agency — for Johnson to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019, he needs a fourth accrued season. If he holds out and doesn't report to the Cardinals 30 days before the season begins, then he will only have accrued three seasons and would become a restricted free agent in 2019.
