Denmark v Australia: Match Preview

Denmark v Australia: Match Preview Day eight of the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia sees the return of Group C, where Denmark take on Australia. Denmark face the Aussies on the back of a hard fought 1-0 win against Peru thanks to Yussuf Poulsen’s second half goal, whilst Australia have it all to do after falling to a 2-1 defeat against France despite an encouraging performance. With France expected to beat Peru, this contest could see Denmark join them in the last 16 with a win, but Australia will want to avoid an early World Cup exit and will take plenty of positives from their group opener against the European Championship finalists to try and get a result here. Denmark should expect a similar test here as they did with Peru. Players such as Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic never look to allow opposition midfielders time and space with the ball, something which William Kvist and Christian Eriksen will need to be wary of. They have an abundance of energy and stamina and a lot of their good work starts here; they will need this to push Denmark for a result here, but will also need to be a lot more clinical in the final third. Whilst Peru gave it a good go, Denmark managed to show some good organisation and were quick to take their chance on the counter attack. They also have a great advantage with Christian Eriksen and his specialism with a dead ball, so Australia should be wary of committing fouls in dangerous areas. This could be just as close as the two opening group games and with both nations needing a result for different reasons, you would once again expect a goal to be enough to separate these sides if somebody was going to win it. Kick off is at 1pm in Samara.

World Cup 2018 Round 16 knockout stage match preview and predictions: Croatia vs Denmark playing on Sunday 1st July 2018.

Croatia vs Denmark Match Preview . Croatia have been one of the most impressive sides in the group stage and they deservedly come into the last 16 round tie with Denmark as clear favorites to progress.

Denmark and Croatia clash in a World Cup last -16 match knowing that a win will take them to a World Cup quarter-final. Never would have these two teams ever imagined that they will meet in a football match to go this far in a World tournament. But the reality has stuck and the game is on.

For the Danes though, they have scraped through to this stage. They need to do better in attack and transition to have any chance against a talented Croatian side. The likes of Christian Eriksen, Pione Sisto, etc have to come to the party and create more chances. Striker Nicolai Jorgensen has had very little to feed on.

After their somewhat fortuitous win over Peru in which Kasper Schmeichel did his bit, the Danes struggled against Australia and just about got a draw against France.

Iceland v Croatia: Match Preview

Iceland v Croatia: Match Preview Iceland and Croatia are no strangers to playing against each other, just as they did in qualifying for the World Cup in Russia. Back then, both registered a win apiece in qualifying against each other with Iceland topping the group. However, in this tournament both have experienced contrasting fortunes. Croatia have won both of their games with style, swagger and air of confidence and look like a team that can go far in the tournament. Meanwhile, Iceland’s first campaign has been mixed. After such a high in their opening game, in which they claimed a historic draw against World Cup heavyweights and two-time winners Argentina, they were very poor against Nigeria were brought back down to Earth with defeat in their second game. Croatia’s fate is already sealed as they know that after this game, they will be in the knockout stages, but top spot is not secured as of yet and they know if they avoid defeat, they will finish as winners of Group D. If Nigeria beat Argentina and Iceland win, Iceland will know that qualifying is out of reach and they will be boarding the plane home. Croatia are expected to make a few changes but are unlikely to weaken their side too much as they still have to play for top spot in the group.

Predicted Lineup: Kasper Schmeichel; Henrik Dalsgaard, Simon Kjaer, Andreas Christensen, Jens Larsen; Lasse Schone, Thomas Delaney; Yussuf Poulsen, Christian Eriksen, Pione Sisto; Nicolai Jorgensen.

Manager Zlatko Dalic made nine changes to his first-choice lineup against Iceland. He is likely to revert back to the players who took the country to the knockout stage. Mario Mandzukic, Dejan Lovren and Ivan Rakitic are the ones among others who will retain their place for this game.

Croatia match preview v Denmark

Croatia match preview v Denmark Croatia were one of only three teams that won all three group games along with Belgium and Uruguay. They also arguably had the toughest group in the World Cup and managed to produce good performances throughout those three games and maintain consistency. However, they play their first World Cup knockout game since 1998 and many expect them to win against fellow European side Denmark. In their last match against Iceland in Rostov, Croatia had a much changed team with only Modric and Perisic retaining their places in the team. Also in that last match the players who particularly impressed were Mateo Kovacic, Milan Badelj and Andrej Kramaric. Those three in particular would have given Dalic a headache after their good performances. There were a few key points and one of them was that, Luka Modric was very on form and one of the stars of the group stages and he benefitted massively from playing in a higher role in central-midfield. Against Nigeria and Argentina he scored and played the game in his own way and with some much freedom. There have a great balance to their side as they defend and attack well and do it equally as good. When they attack they have good numbers that go forward and when defending they have good numbers back which proves how organised and solid and adaptable they are to attacking and defending. Denmark in the group stages proved to be a tough nut to crack and a hard side to break down, so don’t expect Denmark first 60 to 70 minutes to do a lot of attacking but definetly more defending and more frustration and what for their moment to pounce if Croatia make errors. As they have done in their frist two games they have intended to attack and that will be the case tomorrow.

stats pack:

  • This will be the sixth time that Croatia and Denmark meet. Their head-to-head is equal with two wins each and a draw.
  • The only tournament game between them was back in Euro 1996, Croatia won that game 3-0.

  • This is the first time that Croatia have reached the knockout stage of a World Cup since 1998. They finished that year, which incidentally was their best ever tournament performance.

  • Croatia have all three group stage games in this World Cup, having conceded only one goal, that too a penalty.

  • This is Denmark’s fourth knockout appearance in their fifth World Cup. Previously they got through the group stage in 1986, 1998 and 2002.

  • Denmark have only scored two goals in three game in this World Cup. However, on record, they have netted 7 goals in four knockout games before.

  • Luka Modric will equal the record of most appearances in tournament football by a Croat (18). Darijo Srna held that feat until now.

  • Christian Eriksen is the only Denmark player to have more than one shot on target in this tournament (4).

Russia v Croatia: Match Preview .
Host nation Russia are bidding to reach their first World Cup semi-final since 1966 when they take on Croatia in the last quarter-final of 2018. Both sides will know whether they would be facing either England or Sweden in a semi-final clash by the time kick-off arrives in the evening. Russia continued to defy the odds and progressed from the last 16 after a shock result against 2010 World Champions Spain, whom they overcame on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Croatia were nowhere near as inspiring in their match against Denmark compared to their fantastic group stage performances, but they also managed to progress via a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Luka Modric had a penalty in extra time saved by Kasper Schmeichel but was amongst the scorers in the shootout as Croatia marched on. They are now looking to reach their first World Cup semi-final since 1998. Both sides will sense a real opportunity here to reach the last four and a close encounter is surely on the cards. Having both won via penalties in the last 16, there will be no fear from either side heading into this fixture no matter how long it may take to separate the two nations. Russia are still set to be major underdogs in this clash but with the home support, they will be looking to take the game to a very clever Croatia outfit and deny them the space to control the game.
