Iceland v Croatia: Match Preview

Iceland v Croatia: Match Preview Iceland and Croatia are no strangers to playing against each other, just as they did in qualifying for the World Cup in Russia. Back then, both registered a win apiece in qualifying against each other with Iceland topping the group. However, in this tournament both have experienced contrasting fortunes. Croatia have won both of their games with style, swagger and air of confidence and look like a team that can go far in the tournament. Meanwhile, Iceland’s first campaign has been mixed. After such a high in their opening game, in which they claimed a historic draw against World Cup heavyweights and two-time winners Argentina, they were very poor against Nigeria were brought back down to Earth with defeat in their second game. Croatia’s fate is already sealed as they know that after this game, they will be in the knockout stages, but top spot is not secured as of yet and they know if they avoid defeat, they will finish as winners of Group D. If Nigeria beat Argentina and Iceland win, Iceland will know that qualifying is out of reach and they will be boarding the plane home. Croatia are expected to make a few changes but are unlikely to weaken their side too much as they still have to play for top spot in the group.

For Croatia, Wednesday’s game is the biggest they’ve played since 1998. They play England in a World Cup Semi-Final, with the winner heading to Sunday’s showpiece final.

The game is being played at the Luzhniki Stadium, where the final will be hosted on July 15th.

Croatia have had to dig deep and fight hard to win their previous two knockout games as both of them went the full distance. They needed penalties to beat both Denmark and Russia.

However, they have, at times, shown what a real force they can be and why they were fancied to be dark horses at the start of the tournament.

GETTY. Gareth Southgate has helped England grip the nation this World Cup. England have made their way to the semi-finals of the World Cup, the first time they have done so since Italia 1990. Despite the fact it is one of the youngest squads that the Three Lions have taken to a tournament

Here’s the XI that I expect them to select for the game against England.

Chelsea linked with a move for Sime Vrsaljko .
Chelsea have identified Atletico Madrid star Sime Vrsaljko as a summer target, according to reports from Italy. It’s believed that the Blues have drawn up a shortlist of transfer targets ahead of Maurizio Sarri’s imminent appointment as the club’s manager, and Vrsaljko is among the options under consideration. The right-back is currently away on international duty at the World Cup. Vrsaljko has helped his native Croatia to a shock appearance in the illustrious competition’s final, and he will hope to come away from the tournament as a World Cup winner. Vrsaljko enjoyed an impressive season domestically in Spain and flourished in Diego Simeone’s Atletico side. His displays have caught the eyes of many, it seems, and Chelsea are the latest club to be linked. The Blues could see Davide Zappacosta leave the club this summer amid links with Inter Milan and it seems they are planning a raid on Atletico to prise away Vrsaljko as a new starting right-back.
