Belgium vs Japan: Match preview

Belgium vs Japan: Match preview Belgium head into their 2018 World Cup Round of 16 clash against Japan as Group G winners after being one of just three nations to proceed from the group stage with a 100% record. Roberto Martinez’s exciting side kicked-off their campaign by beating tournament debutants Panama 3-0 in Sochi, before thumping Tunisia 5-2 in Moscow and then edging England 1-0 in the top-spot decider in Kaliningrad. They now travel to Rostov where Group H runners-up Japan await, a side not to be underestimated following their opening game victory against eventual group winners Colombia. Martinez fielded a heavily rotated side against Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions, who were missing some key names of their own, after both securing their progression into the knock-out phase in game-week two. The likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku all didn’t feature, which made the win all that little bit sweeter, but those stars are all expected to return for Monday’s clash. Lukaku, in particular, will want to continue his fine form in the competition as he currently sits second on four goals behind Harry Kane, who has bagged five, in the race for the Golden Boot. His goalscoring exploits contributed to the Red Devils scoring nine goals in the group stage, more than any other team, and now face a country who have never won a World Cup knockout tie.
