Southampton completed a deal to sign goalkeeper Angus Gunn from Manchester City on Tuesday.

Gunn has signed a five-year deal with Southampton for a fee thought to be in the region of £10m.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan to Norwich, his hometown team, in the Championship, where he made 51 appearances in all competitions.

His form earned him a call-up to train with the England squad ahead of the World Cup, but why is he a good signing for Southampton?

Manchester City are willing to negotiate the sale of Angus Gunn this summer, with Southampton said to be interested, but it’s claimed by ESPN that they could demand a buy-back clause in any deal for the player. Gunn spent the duration of last season on loan at Championship side Norwich City, where he was tasked with being the club’s first choice goalkeeper. The England Under-21 international caught the eye with some impressive performances between the sticks for the Canaries, and it’s believed that Southampton are keen on the player. Saints are prepared to listen to offers for Fraser Forster this summer and if they do indeed manage to offload the experienced shot-stopper, it’s believed that they will make a move for Gunn. ESPN’s report indicates that any deal for the 22-year-old is likely to cost around £15m, with City have additional demands regarding a future buy-back clause. Gunn is held in high esteem at the Etihad Stadium and it seems that although Pep Guardiola’s side are willing to sell the player, they will seek the option to activate a buy-back clause should they wish in the coming years.
