The Giants on Wednesday picked Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal in the third round of the NFL Supplemental Draft, the league announced, making him the first player taken in the supplemental draft in three years and the first to go that high since Josh Gordon went in the second round in 2012.

The Giants had the third pick in the third round, thus forfeiting their selection in the same round in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Beal is a fleet and aggressive defender who is unafraid to rough up receivers when playing press coverage but also has fluid hips, allowing him to easily turn and run with wideouts.

Western Michigan CB Sam Beal Trying To Enter NFL Supplemental Draft . He won't play for Western Michigan this year because of academics. “The bottom line is he was forced to make this decision,” Western Michigan coach Tim Lester told Yahoo Sports.

Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal is trying to enter the 2018 NFL supplemental draft and will file paperwork to do so, according to multiple media reports. Beal , a 6’1″ 190-pounder will petition the NCAA to enter the draft and could be selected in the first three rounds .

He had 19 pass breakups in his Western Michigan career, though only two interceptions. While he occasionally pays for being overaggressive in press coverage, Beal's biggest deficiency is his tackling, which lacks technique.

He was one of five players who had declared for this year's draft, along with Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander, Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant, Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu and Grand Valley State running back Martayveus Carter.

Beal was considered the cream of the crop and had been expected by many to perhaps go as high as the second round.

Alexander and Bryant were considered fringe candidates to be taken later, the former in part because of off-field concerns. Ugwoegbu's disappointing pro day likely cost him, while the devaluation of running backs in recent years would've made it a surprise if Carter had been drafted.

Jarvis Landry has had a chance to practice with new teammate Josh Gordon and said, "The kid’s unstoppable."Jarvis Landry said in May that he is the best wide receiver in the NFL while Josh Gordon added to that notion saying the Browns have the best group of receivers in the league after the additions of Antonio Callaway and Landry.
