The Mirror state that reports from Spanish newspaper AS are claiming that Arsenal’s scouts have been watching Firpo’s performances and have been impressed with what they have seen. Firpo, still only 21, made his senior dubut for Betis back in February and thereafter went on to start 14 La Liga games towards the end of the season. The Gunners have reportedly notified Betis of their interest in the left-back. The 21-year-old is also capable of playing on the left-wing or on the left side of the central defence. Betis want Firpo to dismiss any interest from Arsenal and commit to a new contract with the club. Firpo has a £22million release clause in his current contract and Betis want to raise this figure in any new contract to warn off interest from other clubs.

Welbeck has fallen out of favour at Arsenal in recent years following the arrival of both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Everton are also said to be in the running to sign Welbeck this summer, but Arsenal would prefer to see the player join Newcastle, who they do not consider direct rivals. The report claims that Newcastle would be prepared to pay the player’s wages, which are believed to be in the region of £100,000-a-week, despite Benitez working on a small budget this summer. Newcastle remain interested in West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, but it is yet to be seen if they will activate his relegation release clause.
