Newcastle in talks to land relegated midfielder on free transfer

Newcastle in talks to land relegated midfielder on free transfer Ki Sung-yueng is in talks with Newcastle over a free transfer to the club following Swansea City’s relegation. The Chronicle reports that talks have taken place as Rafa Benitez continues to add to his squad over the summer. The midfielder confirmed earlier this season that he would not be extending his contract with the Swans, bringing an end to his six-year stay at the club. At the age of 29, he would bring a wealth of experience in the Premier League and could fill the void left by Mikel Merino, who is returning to Spain after just one season in the Premier League. Real Sociedad are keen to bring in the player back to his home country and have activated the release clause in his contract. It has been well documented that Benitez is working on small budgets throughout the summer transfer window, so the Newcastle boss will be keen to get this deal over the line.

Mikel Merino is close to leaving Newcastle for Real Sociedad - Sky sources. Merino initially joined Newcastle on loan from Borussia Dortmund last summer before the Magpies made the deal permanent in October - handing the Spaniard a five-year contract.

Real Sociedad look set to sign Mikel Merino from Newcastle United after allegedly agreeing to pay his release clause. However, Sociedad are the first team to agree to pay the £10m-plus release clause written into the 21-year-old's contract at St James' Park.

Mikel Merino has left Newcastle United for Real Sociedad after just one season at St James' Park, the club have confirmed.

The midfielder arrived on loan from Borussia Dortmund ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, before the Magpies exercised a clause to make the move permanent on a five-year deal in October.

However, Merino found Premier League starts hard to come by in the second half of the campaign and just 14 of his 24 top-flight appearances were as part of the starting XI.

The 22-year-old now returns to Spain with Sociedad, a club based just over 50 miles from his home town of Pamplona, with reports suggesting he had a £10million release clause in his contract.

"I'm very happy and feel joy. I love this club, it is very close to Osasuna. I have been a fan since I was little," Merino, who has signed a deal until 2023, told Sociedad's official website.

"I am delighted to be here and I can't wait to work with the ball."

Brighton plan £10m swoop for Newcastle man .
Brighton and Hove Albion are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden this summer. The holding midfielder is understood to have handed in a transfer request at St James’ Park as he looks to secure a move down south on the basis of ‘exceptional family reasons’. This appears to have prompted Brighton to express an interest in a summer deal and, according to the Chronicle, the Seagulls would be willing to spend in the region of £10 million on Hayden. Rafa Benitez is believed to be reluctant to let Hayden go but seems likely to sanction his sale to allow the midfielder the chance to be closer to his family in the southern region of England. Hayden was a regular for Newcastle in the first half of last season but progressively became more of a rotational option for Benitez, who could be set to lose yet another midfield option. Ki Sung-yueng has joined on a free transfer from Swansea this summer but with Mikel Merino departing for Real Sociedad and Hayden seemingly seeking an exit, Benitez could be forced to look for another central midfielder.
