The Mariners travel to Colorado to face the Rockies this weekend, meaning they won't be able to use a designated hitter.

Nelson Cruz could get an early All-Star break because Mariners manager Scott Servais said Thursday Cruz will not play in the outfield against the Rockies.

Cruz entered Thursday's action slashing .265/.361/.541 with 22 home runs and 55 RBIs. But at 38 years old, he's strictly a designated hitter these days. He is expected to be available as a pinch hitter.

The Mariners are currently in pole position for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Sitting Cruz a couple games may pay off in the long run.
