Everton turn their attention to Newcastle's Lascelles Everton have turned their attention to West Ham and Chelsea target Jamaal Lascelles in their pursuit of a new central defender. Ed Aarons of The Guardian reports that the Toffees are interested in signing the former Nottingham Forest star. Lascelles was one of Newcastle’s star performers last season and has already attracted interest from some of the Premier League big boys. Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Lascelles in the past having been impressed with the leadership qualities he has shown at Newcastle. West Ham have also reportedly had bids turned down for the player. Many were considering the defender unfortunate to miss out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad. Rafa Benitez has already expressed his desire to keep Lascelles at the club and build the team around him. However, the Spaniard will also be well aware that selling the defender could bring in funds to help him strengthen elsewhere during the latter stages of the summer transfer window.

After a tumultuous close season, Rafael Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles joined Newcastle United in a show of unity to laud the club's business.

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez and captain Jamaal Lascelles have joined managing director Lee Charnley in writing a letter defending the club's transfer business.

Benitez was critical of Newcastle's failure to make moves in the transfer market earlier in pre-season, but he ended the window with seven signings, bringing in Salomon Rondon and Federico Fernandez shortly before the deadline despite reportedly making a huge profit.

In a news conference on Friday, the Magpies boss appeared to be in better spirits, saying, "I am happy with my team."

Benitez confirms Hayden will remain a Newcastle player Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed that midfielder Isaac Hayden will remain with the club this season, as reported by The Shields Gazette. Hayden had asked to leave St James’ Park this summer, citing “family reasons” as the principle reason for handing in a transfer request. Having started in Newcastle’s game against Braga on Wednesday night in Portugal, Hayden held further talks with Benitez regarding his future. Now following those talks, Benitez is confident that the 23-year old will remain on Tyneside this season, despite reported interest from Brighton. When asked if Hayden would remain a Newcastle player this summer, as reported by The Shields Gazette, Benitez said: “Yeah, I think so.” “He knows that he has to stay and he was working hard (against Braga).” “So, it’s just a question of maybe these 10 days and when you finish the transfer window the players start realising it’s where we are and we have to perform. That’s it.

"Doing good business in a transfer window is about ending the window clearly stronger than when you started and we believe we have done this," it read.

"The view we all share is that we have a better squad now than the one that finished 10th last season and all involved have worked tirelessly to make this happen."

After highlighting the experience of Newcastle's various recruits, three of whom - Fabian Schar, Ki Sung-yueng and Yoshinori Muto - played at the World Cup, the statement continued.

"Given our finishing position last season, we already had a team of players who were more than capable of performing well in the Premier League," it said.

Everton identify Lascelles as key transfer target

Everton identify Lascelles as key transfer target Everton have identified Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles as their main transfer target for the remainder of the summer transfer window. The Northern Echo reports that Everton are ready to test Newcastle’s stance on the defender after previously ruling out any potential sale. The Magpies have previously set their asking price at £50 million for the defender. Lascelles has been heavily linked with moves away from St James’ Park after an impressive season with Newcastle. Chelsea and Everton have been touted as potential destinations in the past, but the Toffees are in the market for another central defender. Marco Silva’s men have pursued a deal for Yerry Mina, but look set to miss out on the Colombian defender. There is also believed to be interest in Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson, but Burnley are said to be leading the race to sign the defender. Everton are in the market for a central defender after Ashley Williams left to join Stoke on loan earlier this week.

Watching from his home on the Wirral, Benítez was able to enjoy the sight of Jamaal Lascelles scoring the only goal of the game to give Newcastle back-to-back Premier League wins and, in the process, pull the plug on the feelgood factor that had swept through Swansea thanks to transfer deadline day.

"They have shown heart, guts and determination and the inference that they are 'Championship' players and not good enough is unfair and untrue. The players all believe in themselves and in the quality of the squad, and we all believe in the players.

"Now, it's about all of us pulling in the same direction, for the good of the club. This came through strongly in a recent positive call between our owner and senior members of the squad, who agreed that better dialogue going forward will benefit all parties and is in the best interests of the club.

"With the transfer window now closed, the focus should be on unity and getting behind the efforts on the pitch."

Owner Mike Ashley similarly criticised the way Newcastle had been described as "a Championship side" in a statement at the end of last season in which he promised to back Benitez in the transfer market.

Newcastle players reportedly temporarily withheld on signing their bonus sheet for the new season amid a dispute with the club.

Tianjin Quanjian hoping to lure Benitez to China .
Tianjin Quanjian are hoping that they can convince Rafa Benitez to move to the Chinese Super League once his deal with Newcastle expires. The Guardian reports that the Chinese club want the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss to take over from Paulo Sousa in nine months time when his deal with St James’ Park expires. It is yet to be seen if Benitez will put pen to paper on a new deal at Newcastle after a strained public relationship with Mike Ashley. The Spaniard has been very vocal about his displeasure of the transfer budget he has been handed during his time with the club. Benitez has been forced to work on small budgets as he attempts to guide Newcastle to safety once again this season. He has often attracted interest from other clubs during his time at the club and any decision on his future could depend on where Newcastle finish this season. Given the money available in the Chinese Super League, Benitez could be tempted by the switch.
