Everton boss Marco Silva has insisted that Phil Jagielka still has a part to play for the club this season.

The Toffees enjoyed a hectic ending to the transfer window and were able to recruit two new central defenders as they brought their summer dealings to a satisfying close.

Yerry Mina joined from Barcelona in a deal believed to be worth around £28 million, whilst Everton also completed the signing of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal.

The duo are, on paper, likely to be the men who Silva call upon to solidify Everton’s defensive unit for the season ahead, with Jagielka’s position in the starting line-up clearly under threat.

Everton confident of landing Kurt Zouma

Everton confident of landing Kurt Zouma Everton are confident of landing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma as they look for defensive reinforcements, the Mirror reports. The Toffees are interested in securing a loan deal for the 23-year-old having failed to secure deals for Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo and Barcelona’s Yerry Mina. Everton boss Marco Silva has desperately been searching to improve his central defensive options this summer, with Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane his only two current options for the position. Mason Holgate has been out injured during pre-season and Silva has already allowed Ashley Williams to leave and join Championship side Stoke City on a season-long loan. Ramiro Funes Mori has also left the Toffees to join up with Villarreal. Now turning his attention to Zouma, Silva is hopeful of bringing the French defender to Goodison Park before tomorrow’s 5pm deadline. Zouma spent last season on loan at Stoke where he started 32 games as Stoke suffered relegation from the Premier League.

However, Jagielka insists Allardyce has achieved the task he was immediately brought in to do in steering the club away from the relegation zone and that he needs a full pre-season over the summer to properly implement his plans .

Despite guiding Everton from the lower half of the table to an eighth-placed finish, Allardyce was the subject of protests from fans unhappy with the style of play. Silva was keen to stress his commitment to entertainment in his first interview on Thursday, and Jagielka is looking forward to playing with

However, new Toffees boss Silva has rubbished claims that Jagielka is now surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, insisting that the veteran defender will still be a key figure on Merseyside as the club enter a new era.

As quoted by Goal, Silva discussed his new-look defensive options:

“It means nothing for Jags. We sold Mori, Williams and bought Mina and Zouma. Everything is the same. Even last season the club brought in Mangala.”
