Griffiths discusses his ongoing contract talks with Celtic

Griffiths discusses his ongoing contract talks with Celtic Leigh Griffiths has revealed that his contract negotiations with Celtic are rapidly drawing towards a positive conclusion. As quoted by BBC Sport, the Scotland international delivered a big update on his current situation at Celtic, with the experienced forward desperate to sign a new deal with the club. “It’s still ongoing. It’s almost completed now and hopefully in the next couple of weeks, it’ll be done and dusted. Hopefully, it’s a nice, long contract. Why would you want to leave a club like Celtic? You’re playing week in, week out playing in front of 60,000 fans every week.” “You’re winning trophies every season. There’s not many players that can say they’ve played for Celtic.” Griffiths’ importance to Brendan Rodgers’ plans at Celtic Park will have only heightened in recent times, with Moussa Dembele completing a big-money move to Ligue 1 giants Lyon last week. Despite having approximately three years remaining on his current deal with the Scottish Premiership champions, Griffiths appears to be positive over extending his stay at Celtic for the foreseeable future. Having scored 100 goals for Celtic, the 28-year-old is setting his sights on bigger and better things with the club. With contract talks progressing well, Griffiths has set himself a goal of scoring another century for the Hoops. “I’m in an elite number of players that have scored 100 goals and I want to extend that, I want to try and get to the 200 now so if the contract gets over the line, that’ll be my next target.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is on the cusp of signing a new contract with the club, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

The deal for the Scotland striker to sign is a welcome one according to Rodgers, who still believes the Scotland forward can improve even more.

Speaking about the impending news, he said:

“Yeah, I think it’s pretty close. It’s virtually agreed. I had a long chat with Leigh today and he’s very happy here. He knows what he needs to do to improve and develop as a player. I think 25 yards in he is as good as you’ll get in terms of a goalscorer. But the game has moved on.”

“It’s not just about goals now for strikers. It’s about how they work, how they press. They’ve got to be able to run forward and run back. He is a player I always want to have here because he has that goalscoring threat.”

Scott Brown has future at Celtic beyond playing career

Scott Brown has future at Celtic beyond playing career Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he sees a future at Celtic for Scott Brown beyond his playing career. Soon to sign a new contract with the club as captain, Brown can step into a backroom role with the Hoops once he hangs up his boots, Rodgers believes. His experience on the pitch in general, along with his Celtic connection, would make the 33-year-old a perfect candidate for such a job. Speaking on the possibility, the boss said: “When that time comes someone like him, with his experience and qualities can do it. If it’s something he wants to do, because not every player does after preparing and playing football from the age of seven to their mid-to-late 30s.” “They might just want a bit of time away from football. But with Browny that is something I have spoken to him about down the line and it’s something he will maybe want to take up.” Rodgers was full of praise for his captain, unsurprisingly, as he declared his contract would be done soon. “He’s still concentrating on his football. His authority and the way he plays the game is outstanding for us. So that’s his concentration at the minute. He has been magnificent in my time here.” “He is still fit and if we manage him over these next few years and keep the strength in his legs then he has a great tactical brain. So he is someone I am very keen to keep as well. I’m sure that will get done within the next few weeks.

The gaffer went on to reiterate how close the deal was to being signed.

“He is a player you know can get a goal. So, yeah, I think we are nearly there on that and pretty soon I hope it can be announced and be done, which is great news for him and great news for Celtic.”

It’s good news for Celtic to tie down the Scot, as Griffiths now plays an even more important role in their forward line after the exit of Moussa Dembele.
