Rodgers delivers update on contract talks with Brown

Rodgers delivers update on contract talks with Brown Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has delivered a positive update on how contract talks are progressing between the club and midfielder Scott Brown. The Hoops travel to St Mirren on Friday evening as they look to clinch an important win in the Scottish Premiership. Speaking ahead of the match, Rodgers was quizzed by the media on Brown’s contractual situation. Twitter: BR on new contract for @ScottBrown8: “Scott has made it clear he wants to be here, and he knows what we think of him.” (@CelticFC) Brown, who previously captained Scotland’s national team, has been a Celtic player since 2007 and appears to be keen on extending his stay, with talks over a new contract extension believed to be progressing well. The 33-year-old’s current deal at Celtic Park runs until the summer of 2019 and the Hoops have wasted no time in working to secure his future at the club. Brown, despite entering the twilight years of his playing career, remains an integral part of Rodgers’ plans with the Scottish champions and Celtic will hope to conclude negotiations with their captain in the imminent future.

Brendan Rodgers has talked up the chances of both Scott Brown and James Forrest signing new deals at the club.

The Scotsman have quoted the Hoops boss as saying the deals are close with both players.

“Scott has made it clear he wants to be here and I am sure there will be a deal done pretty soon on that.
He is quite relaxed about it. He knows what we think of him here at the club so hopefully that will be done.”

“James and his people will be speaking with the club and, likewise, a player we would love to extend here because he has been absolutely brilliant in my time here.”

Rodgers will be hoping that the duo can follow Leigh Griffiths, who is also closing in on a new deal with the Bhoys.

Celtic player ratings: Rangers (H)

Celtic player ratings: Rangers (H) Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic earned their first Derby victory of the season as they defeated Steven Gerrard’s Rangers 1-0 on Sunday. Olivier Ntcham scored the only goal of a hard-fought game to claim all three points for The Hoops. Celtic now sit second, four points ahead of Rangers in the table. Celtic completely dominated the first half, going close to securing the opening goal through James Forrest. Forrest and Ntcham were the stand out performers for Celtic, with Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor being the only person stopping The Hoops from slotting away more goals. The breakthrough came when Celtic countered a Rangers attack, Forrest picking out an unmarked Ntcham at the back post who put Rodgers’ side in front and secured the victory. Celtic were tight at the back all game and Rangers struggled to break through as they lost for the first time under new manager Gerrard.

Brown’s new deal has dominated the headlines recently, with dominant midfielder making his feelings very clear about extending his stay at the club.

Forrest was one of the unsung heroes of the previous title-winning campaign with a number of impressive performances, helping the Hoops on their way.

The news will come as a huge boost to the club as they prepare to take on St Mirren in a bid to close the gap between themselves and Hearts on Friday night.

Can Ryan Christie really fill Moussa Dembele's boots? .
During Celtic’s eventful and rather disappointing summer transfer window, the biggest setback for the Scottish champions was losing their star striker Moussa Dembele to Lyon. A £19.7 million deal was eventually struck between the two clubs in the final hours of the window, money that sadly Celtic could not afford to turn down. However, at the start of the day, manager Brendan Rodgers insisted that he was keen to hold on to Dembele unless a replacement was brought in. He stressed throughout last season that having three strikers at the club was imperative. So whilst no replacement striker was brought in, could Rodgers look to one of his many fringe players to fill the void? Step forward, Ryan Christie. Christie joined the club as an exciting attacking midfielder from Inverness in 2015 but was still a pretty raw prospect. Under Rodgers, the 23-year-old has been out on loan to Aberdeen twice, firstly in the second half of the 2016/17 season, then the entirety of the last campaign and has benefited from more playing time under the coaching of Derek McInnes. Over 18 months at the Dons, he made 57 appearances whilst scoring 15 goals. He also contributed with 18 assists and was deployed in attacking midfield but also frequently out on the right-hand side. Aberdeen were clearly impressed by Christie in his time at the club and were keen for a third spell but with Rodgers keeping the Scot at Parkhead, the Northern Irish boss must see still see a future for him.
