Mets players are preparing to play one final time with captain David Wright.

The 35-year-old third baseman announced Thursday he would be activated for the Mets’ final homestand and start during their game Sept. 29 before retiring after the season. Jose Reyes, who was teammates with Wright from 2005-11 before re-joining New York in 2016, said he was emotional when he heard the news.

“We were both crying, it was a tough moment,” Reyes said (via The New York Post). “I didn’t know what to say in the moment. I just said, ‘I love you, bro, so enjoy your family.’ I didn’t have too many words to say.”

David Wright will be activated for Mets' final homestand

David Wright will be activated for Mets' final homestand The captain didn't use the word retirement during a Thursday news conference but made it clear he expects this to be the end of his career. The captain will be activated from the disabled list Sept. 25 for the team's final homestand and will start at third base Sept. 29 against the Marlins, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon announced Thursday.

Reyes and Wright were the Mets’ brightest young stars when they entered MLB in the early 2000s. They both made multiple All-Star teams and led New York to the 2006 NLCS. Wright was also a part of the Mets run to the 2015 World Series, where they fell to the Royals in five games.

The third baseman has been on the disabled list since May 2016 as he has dealt with shoulder and back injuries. Reyes, who has struggled at the plate this season, said he hopes the two have the chance to share the field in Wright’s last game.

“That, for sure, will be one of the highlights of my career if that happens,” Reyes said.

Current Mets starter Steven Matz said he admired Wright while he was growing up on nearby Long Island.

“Some of these guys from the West Coast, the new guys coming up, I don’t know if they got the opportunity to see how good of a player he was,” Matz said. “The guy was unbelievable.”
