Ritchie and Shelvey continue to recover from injuries

Ritchie and Shelvey continue to recover from injuries Newcastle United duo Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie are making good progress in their respective bids to put recent injury struggles behind them, Rafa Benitez has confirmed. The pair were absent in Newcastle’s recent fixture against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and could only watch on as the Magpies were consigned to a narrow 2-1 defeat. Nevertheless, Benitez appears to be in an optimistic mood over the duo’s fitness, with the pair using the international break to work hard on their recovery from injuries. Speaking to NUFC TV, as cited in a report from the Chronicle Live, the Spaniard revealed that both Shelvey and Ritchie are working “really hard” to be available for after the international break. “When you have players injured the international break gives you some time to recover. They are training really hard and that’s good news for us because they’re getting closer.” It’s been a challenging start to the season for Newcastle, who are still without their first win of the season. However, the near return to action for key duo Shelvey and Ritchie will undoubtedly come as a big boost to Benitez, who will see his side face Arsenal at home after the break has come to a close.

Newcastle United have been handed a double boost as midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie have returned to training ahead of the visit of Arsenal this weekend, according to a report on the Chronicle Live.

Englishman Shelvey has missed the last three games with a thigh injury and the Magpies have missed his presence and vision in midfield.

On the other hand, Ritchie was forced to miss the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City and Scotland’s fixtures during the international break due to a knee injury, but manager Rafa Benitez has admitted that both players are available for selection.

'Very positive' Lascelles-Ritchie clash shows Newcastle care - Benitez

'Very positive' Lascelles-Ritchie clash shows Newcastle care - Benitez The club captain has been involved in reported rows with his team-mate and manager, but the Newcastle boss is glad his defender caresRafael Benitez says a dressing-room dispute between Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie is "very positive" as it shows his Newcastle United players care.

He said:

“These kind of weeks are difficult because you have people coming back.”

“Shelvey and Ritchie are in training. But no big problems”

Benitez is not expected to rush Shelvey back into the starting lineup and risk aggravating his injury but with the Toon desperate for their first win of the reason, Benitez may use him.

Ritchie is more likely to come straight back into the starting team and he gives the side more attacking threat with his set-piece deliveries.

Newcastle Predicted XI: Manchester City (A) .
Newcastle are win-less through three games of the Premier League season – but there performances have deserved more. The Magpies were frustrated against Spurs on the opening weekend, before a late penalty miss from Kenedy against Cardiff condemned the Tynesiders to a 0-0 draw. A penalty and own goal for opponents Chelsea on Sunday was enough to hand the visitors a 2-1 win, and Newcastle must be left scratching their heads wondering how they failed to come out of those fixtures with just a point. And things aren’t getting easier. A trip to Manchester City is never what a team in Newcastle’s position wants, but it will give the players a chance to prove themselves against some of Europe’s premier talent. Here’s how we think Newcastle might line up against the champions: GK: Martin Dubravka The undisputed number one in the North East. RB: DeAndre Yedlin The American full-back was cursed with putting through his own net to hand Chelsea the win, but he did provide a great delivery for Joselu’s goal. CB: Federico Fernandez The new signing from Swansea looks poised to hold down the perimeter of Newcastle’s centre-back trio. CB: Jamaal Lascelles The skipper was left out against Chelsea through injury, but could return to the lineup here. CB: Fabian Schär The other new signing means that Benitez is blessed with four first team quality centre halves – Ciaran Clark the one to miss out here. LB: Paul Dummett Veteran full-back who could have his hands full with Riyad Mahrez.
