Wesley Hoedt a doubt for Watford clash

Wesley Hoedt a doubt for Watford clash Saints boss Mark Hughes has revealed that Wesley Hoedt is a doubt for the visit of Watford this weekend. Hughes revealed that the defender is suffering a foot injury, and so could be a doubt for the game against the Hornets on Saturday. Speaking ahead of the clash, the Welshman said: “We’ve got a little bit of a doubt over Wesley Hoedt. He’s got an infection in his foot which just needs to calm down a little bit so at the minute he’s a little bit sore. “He didn’t train today, but apart from that we’re okay.” Hughes also revealed that midfielder Mario Lemina is a slight doubt for the visit of Watford, but should be available for selection come Saturday. Southampton have been in poor form of late, and suffered a big defeat to Manchester City last weekend. Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to bounce back against Watford, who sit eighth in the Premier League table.

The Saints welcome the Hornets to St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday as they look to secure only their second win of the Premier League season.

Hughes spoke to the media on Thursday ahead of the team’s crunch clash with Watford and, as quoted by the club’s official website, delivered an update on the condition of his players.

Hughes proceeded to then allude to a minor injury that Lemina appears to have sustained, with the Welshman citing some “tightness in his thigh” as a minor concern.

Lemina: Saints players are still behind Hughes

Lemina: Saints players are still behind Hughes Southampton’s first-team squad are still backing Mark Hughes despite the club’s torrid start to the new Premier League season, Mario Lemina has claimed. Speaking to Sky Sports following Southampton’s 6-1 defeat away at Manchester City on Sunday, Gabon international Lemina stated that the entire squad ‘trust in him and believe in him’. Hughes’ future at St Mary’s has come into question in recent weeks, with the club languishing in 16th place on the Premier League table and just two points above bottom-placed Fulham. The Saints have won only one Premier League fixture this season and have netted one goal in their last six outings. This has led to claims that Hughes could be sacked if Southampton fail to secure a win against Watford at the weekend, with available managers such as Sam Allardyce and David Moyes linked with the hot-seat at St Mary’s. Lemina, however, insisted that the Southampton players have total faith in Hughes as they look to turn around their difficult start to the campaign. The 25-year-old said: “We are all behind him. All of the players trust in him and believe in him. This kind of game cannot affect us because we are strong as a team. Now we have to win games to change the opinion of the fans, everyone.” “We have to come back because we don’t deserve to be in this place in the table because we had some good games.

Saints boss Mark Hughes has reiterated the significance of Saturday’s home meeting with Watford and says his squad are working hard to deliver a much-needed response following “It becomes huge. We know ourselves the areas in which we weren’t strong enough [against Manchester City],” Hughes said.

Despite this, Hughes spoke confidently about Lemina’s chances of featuring against Watford. The Southampton manager said:

“There’s a slight doubt over Mario Lemina, who just has a little bit of tightness in his thigh, but we don’t think that will stop him from being available for selection.”

Lemina has been a mainstay under Hughes this season and will be keen to keep his place alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in central midfield against Watford.

Moyes and Allardyce named as potential Hughes replacements.
Former West Ham and Everton managers Sam Allardyce and David Moyes are both in the running to replace Mark Hughes at Southampton. According to a report from the Daily Mirror, both ex-Premier League bosses are under consideration for the job, with pressure mounting on Mark Hughes. It has been suggested that Hughes could be out of a job by the end of the weekend if Southampton fail to beat Watford on Saturday. The Saints have won just once in 11 games and look set for another battle against relegation. Moyes has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of the season, while Allardyce’s last post was a mixed spell at Everton. The former was largely credited with the way that he steadied the ship during a difficult period for West Ham, who themselves were struggling in the opening stages of last season. Both managers have built up reputations for being ‘firefighter’ managers and would certainly be tasked with guiding the Saints away from the bottom three.
