Fulham are reportedly keen to re-sign former loanee Matt Targett from Premier League rivals Southampton.

According to the Evening Standard, Fulham failed with a £15m move for the player in the summer and will try again in the January window.

Targett joined the Cottagers on loan for the second half of last season and made 18 Championship appearances as the club were promoted via the playoffs.

His arrival coincided with an impressive defensive run as Slavisa Jokanovic’s men conceded just 11 goals in a 17-match unbeaten run.

The Cottagers boast the Premier League’s worst defence in the Premier League this campaign, conceding 29 goals in their 11 matches, four more than 15th-placed Burnley.

Southampton are reportedly keen to keep hold of Matt Targett this summer, despite Fulham ’ s efforts to land him on a permanent deal. The former England Under-21 international joined the Cottagers on loan until the end of the season in January and was a key player for Slavisa Jokanovic’ s men

Having failed to recruit Targett in the summer Fulham instead purchased Joe Bryan in a £6m deal from Bristol City, who has since been sidelined with a hamstring injury.

That has forced Jokanovic to play centre-back Maxime Le Marchand in his place, and on occasion, Ryan Sessegnon has also filled in.

Targett is behind Ryan Bertrand in the St Marys pecking order and has made just one league start this campaign.

Obafemi keen to be involved more for Southampton.
Michael Obafemi is determined to become more involved with Southampton’s first-team this season. The young striker made only his first appearance of the season last weekend as he was introduced in the Saints’ comprehensive 6-1 defeat against Manchester City. Obafemi has progressed through the ranks at Southampton and appears to now be in the first-team picture under Mark Hughes. Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of Saints’ crunch clash with Watford in the Premier League this weekend, Obafemi discussed his eagerness to feature more regularly for the senior side. The 18-year-old said: “I know I can do it deep down, it’s just whether I can prove it on the pitch. I think that’s what I’m doing. It was my second appearance for the club, and hopefully, there are many more to come.” Earlier on this week, Obafemi was called up to the Republic of Ireland’s senior squad for the first time, as competition for his services at international level grows. Although the likes of Danny Ings and Shane Long appear to be ahead of Obafemi in the pecking order at Southampton, the striker alluded to how the senior figures in the squad are helping him to improve. Obafemi said: “During sessions and after sessions, Shane Long, Charlie Austin and Danny Ings all talk to me, telling me where to be in certain circumstances in a game, double movements and what to do when the midfielders have the ball.
