Liverpool have confirmed that defender Joe Gomez suffered a fracture to the lower left leg during the win over Burnley on Wednesday night.

The club’s official Twitter account confirmed the news, with the defender now expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

Gomez’s injury marred what was an important win for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they bid to maintain pace with Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

The news comes as a major blow to both Gomez and Liverpool, with the young defender forming a brilliant partnership with Virgil van Dijk this season.

Gomez had made the centre-back position his own, ahead of Dejan Lovren.

The latter is now expected to come back into the fold and replace Gomez in his absence, with the defender now ruled out until the early stages of 2019.

With Gomez able to play out on the right or in a central position, Klopp has now lost a versatile option at the back for a considerable amount of time.

Leicester enter Ibai Gomez race.
Leicester City are reportedly ready to battle Leeds United in their pursuit of Deportivo Alaves winger Ibai Gomez. It is claimed by Spanish news outlet AS that the Foxes have emerged as potential suitors for the 29-year-old, whose future in La Liga has come under scrutiny in recent weeks. The creative wide player has started 15 games this season and has found the net on three occasions. Gomez has also chipped in with two assists for Alaves. Since his move from Athletic Bilbao in 2016, the attacker has been a key player at the Mendizorrotza Stadium but AS claim that he could be poised to depart in a cut-price deal when the transfer window opens at the start of the year. It is reported that Alaves do not want to part company with Gomez but could allow him to leave in a deal worth just €4 million, presenting a potential bargain to interested parties such as Leicester. AS also state that the release clause in the winger’s contract is currently set at €10 million.
