Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is dealing with post-operation complications from the surgery he had to repair his broken leg, according to a report Thursday.

NFL Network, citing unidentified sources, said the 34-year-old is battling an infection relating to the surgery he had on his broken tibia and fibula following the team's 23-21 loss to the Texans in Week 11. The report notes it's too early to tell what this means for his future on the field.

The Redskins released a statement Thursday, asking for privacy as Smith deals with this matter.

"On behalf of Alex Smith, we appreciate all of the concerns and prayers over the injury he incurred on November 18th against the Houston Texans," the statement read. "Although this is a serious injury, Alex and his family remain strong. We would ask that everyone please honor the Smtih family's request for privacy at this time."

Smith underwent surgery on his broken leg Nov. 19 and initially was expected to need six to eight months to recover. Smith suffered a compound fracture, which left bone protruding through his skin.
