The NBA has fined Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson $15,000 for an obscene gesture made toward a group of fans after Monday's game against the Nets, the league announced Thursday.

The 27-year-old flipped off fans as he walked off the court after Cleveland narrowly escaped with a 99-97 victory. It's not clear what sparked Thompson's gesture or if the fans were heckling him throughout the game.

Thompson's fine is relatively small in comparison to punishments a few other NBA players have faced in recent weeks. Warriors forward Kevin Durant was hit with a $25,000 fine last month for telling a fan to "watch the f—ing game and shut the f— up." Clippers guard Patrick Beverley also received a $25,000 punishment for throwing the ball at a Mavericks fan.

Thompson had a strong night before making the gesture, finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the win against the Nets.

Cavaliers' Thompson Fined For Inappropriate Gesture Towards Fan.
On Thursday, Cleveland Cavaliers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, Kiki Vandeweghe announced that centre Tristan Thompson would be fined $15,000 USD for “Inappropriate gestures towards a fan”. It was reported that he pointed his middle finger at a fan in the crowd during the Cavaliers game against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Centre in Brooklyn. The incident occurred at the end of the game, after shooting guard Alec Burke’s hit a game winning shot for Cleveland to hand the Nets their seventh straight loss. There was no word on any suspension regarding the incident, but further information regarding suspensions should probably come out on the weekend. Thompson’s incident will be re-evaluated Friday, when the NBA will discuss any further fines/suspensions. Tristan Thompson is currently in his eighth season for Cleveland at the age of 23. Thompson is averaging 11.8 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2.1 APG, while shooting 58.5% from the field. He’s playing an important role for the Cavaliers, as head coach Larry Drew is playing Thompson over 30 minutes a night. He will be really missed by the Cavaliers should he miss a game. The struggling Cavaliers without LeBron James are carrying a record of 5-19, the third worst record in the Eastern Conference.
