Rodgers claims Celtic unlikely to spend much more this month

Rodgers claims Celtic unlikely to spend much more this month Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has shot down hopes of major spending this month, with the Northern Ireland coach unlikely to spend big. The Hoops broke their transfer record on Odsonne Edouard from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer for £9million, and Rodgers isn’t expecting to be investing similar amounts this month. Celtic have already signed Vakoun Issouf Bayo for £2million during this window, as well as having agreed loan moves for West Brom’s Oliver Burke and PSG’s Timothy Weah.

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Celtic trio Lewis Morgan, Jack Hendry and Youssouf Mulumbu are set to leave the club on loan this month.

As reported by the Scotsman, Rodgers revealed his plans for the rest of the month, with the three players looking to depart in search of regular first-team football.

Neither of the aforementioned players have found game time easy to come by this season.

Mulumbu only joined the Hoops in the summer but has been used sparingly by Rodgers, despite impressing during his time at Kilmarnock.

Speaking about the midfielder, Rodgers explained:

Rodgers expecting more Celtic signings

Rodgers expecting more Celtic signings Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has talked up the possibility of yet more transfer activity this month. The Hoops have already been very busy in January, bringing in three players so far. Oliver Burke joined on loan from West Brom until the end of the season, while the signings of striker duo Timothy Weah and Vakoun Issouf Bayo were also confirmed recently. The latter arrives in a deal believed to be worth around £2 million, while Weah, like Burke, will see out the season with the Hoops on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Brendan Rodgers has strong links with Chelsea, where he was a youth coach and reserve-team boss before enjoying success as a manager with Swansea Musonda has made just two starts since joining Celtic on an 18- month loan deal. It could have repercussions if Brendan Rodgers ever hopes to be

“Youssouf is at the age where he needs to play really. He came in as a support player to the team but he’s at the age really where he needs to play in the next part of the season so he’ll probably go out on loan.”

Morgan has failed to break into the side and is expected to suffer even more following the signings of Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah this month.

Central defender Hendry has shown flashes of promise but has fallen out of favour and needs regular game time to get his development back on track.

Rodgers explained why game time is important for the defender.

“It’s just about time. When you think of Jack coming in a year ago it was a steep learning curve for him, playing under big pressure and big games.”

“What he has is potential because there are a lot of really good things to his game and of course when you make mistakes at the big clubs then of course it gets highlighted even more.”

Celtic face anxious wait regarding Filip Benkovic's injury.
Celtic face an anxious wait for news on Filip Benkovic’s availability for their post-winter break games. Brendan Rodgers’ side don’t play again until January 19th, when they host Airdrieonians in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, with their next league game coming four days later when they play St Mirren at Celtic Park. Benkovic was forced off late in the first half during the 1-0 defeat to local rivals Rangers in the Glasgow derby with what appears to be a hamstring injury. Celtic will get the injury scanned and assessed as quickly as possible, and will begin treatment in hope of getting the centre-back fit and ready for the post-break games. Benkovic has been impressive since arriving from Leicester City on loan and Rodgers will want him back fit and ready as soon as possible as Celtic have some tough games to play in late January and early February.
