Virgil van Dijk has played down of him being the best defender in the world, explaining that he doesn’t believe anyone can claim the title.

Since moving to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, Van Dijk has hardly put a foot wrong, consistently performing fantastically for the Reds.

The Dutchman has been crucial to all of the success Liverpool have had in the past two seasons, both in the Premier League, domestic cups and in the Champions League.

However, despite receiving an absurd number of plaudits from fans, pundits and both former and current players alike, Van Dijk has dismissed talk of him being the best defensive option in the world currently.

Virgil van Dijk set to be fit to face Southampton

Virgil van Dijk set to be fit to face Southampton Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk injured his ankle during his team’s 2-1 win over Tottenham at the weekend and was spotted with an ice pack on it during the post-game interviews. There were concerns that Van Dijk could miss Friday’s clash against his former club Southampton, but it seems like the knock suffered by the defender was not serious as he took part in training on Tuesday afternoon. Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from the Saints in a deal worth £75m back in January 2018, has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season and is currently the favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award at the end of the campaign.

Speaking in Liverpool’s match-day programme, as reported by MailOnline, Van Dijk said:

“Nobody can really claim that title – it’s just about opinions.”

“We just need to enjoy it when players are doing well for their teams and I’m feeling good at the moment.”

“Obviously there are a lot of expectations when you come to a club for a record fee but you can’t change that.”

“You just need to perform and show it on the pitch and gain respect through that. I’ve tried to do that since day one and it’s been going all right. There are plenty of good central defenders around and I enjoy watching them.”

“If I watch big games like the Champions League on TV then I’m definitely watching what different centre-backs are doing in certain situations.”

“When people are talking about you in a positive way, that’s always a good thing. But, basically, that’s it.”
