Virgil van Dijk has played down of him being the best defender in the world, explaining that he doesn’t believe anyone can claim the title.

Since moving to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, Van Dijk has hardly put a foot wrong, consistently performing fantastically for the Reds.

The Dutchman has been crucial to all of the success Liverpool have had in the past two seasons, both in the Premier League, domestic cups and in the Champions League.

However, despite receiving an absurd number of plaudits from fans, pundits and both former and current players alike, Van Dijk has dismissed talk of him being the best defensive option in the world currently.

Matip believes Van Dijk is a "complete defender"

Matip believes Van Dijk is a Liverpool defender Joel Matip has labelled his centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk as a “complete defender”, as reported on the official club website. The Dutchman has put in several impressive performances so far for Liverpool this season and is a contender for the PFA Player of the Year award. Van Dijk was at his best again as Liverpool overcame Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday and Matip expressed his admiration for his teammate. He said: “He’s a great defender. And being around him, I think everybody improves. He has had a big impact on the improvement. ” “It’s great to play [with] him. He’s a complete defender and he knows what to do.

Speaking in Liverpool’s match-day programme, as reported by MailOnline, Van Dijk said:

“Nobody can really claim that title – it’s just about opinions.”

“We just need to enjoy it when players are doing well for their teams and I’m feeling good at the moment.”

“Obviously there are a lot of expectations when you come to a club for a record fee but you can’t change that.”

“You just need to perform and show it on the pitch and gain respect through that. I’ve tried to do that since day one and it’s been going all right. There are plenty of good central defenders around and I enjoy watching them.”

“If I watch big games like the Champions League on TV then I’m definitely watching what different centre-backs are doing in certain situations.”

“When people are talking about you in a positive way, that’s always a good thing. But, basically, that’s it.”

Pochettino heaps praise on Van Dijk.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has heaped praise on Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk after his performance on Sunday. Van Dijk impressed at the back as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-1, with a late own goal from Toby Alderweireld earning Jurgen Klopp’s side the three points. The Dutch defender was praised for his defending as he forced Moussa Sissoko to shoot on his left foot when in a great position to potentially put Heung-Min Son through on goal, with Sissoko firing the shot well over the bar.
