The NHL made a mistake on a controversial call in Game 3 of the Western Conference final between the Blues and the Sharks, league executive vice president Colin Campbell admitted Thursday.

“That was the wrong call," Campbell said on Sportsnet's Hockey Central at Noon. "It should’ve been a whistle if the referee had seen it live.”

The Sharks ended up winning the game 5-4 in overtime, but it might have ended differently if there had been a call on a hand pass during the final sequence of the game.

The controversy came when the Sharks' Timo Meier appeared to hit a puck with his hand in midair to allow his team to gain possession. It led to Gustav Nyquist passing the puck to Erik Karlsson, which led to the game-winning goal and ended it in sudden death.

Per thescore.com: Rule 38.4(ix) lets the NHL "assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals (e.g. to ensure they are 'good hockey goals'). For example (but not limited to), pucks that enter the net by going through the net meshing, pucks that enter the net from underneath the net frame, pucks that hit the spectator netting prior to being directed immediately into the goal, pucks that enter the net undetected by the referee, etc."
