Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier thinks that his former club need to strengthen their left-back position in order to improve the team ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Le Tissier claims he doesn’t think that left-back Ryan Bertrand is playing like he was when he first joined Southampton and thinks bosses should possibly start looking for a replacement.

“I think the last couple of seasons Ryan hasn’t been as dynamic as he was in the first seasons he was here.”

He also went on to say that he doesn’t think that Matt Targett is a permanent replacement for Bertrand.

Central defenders Southampton could target this summer

Central defenders Southampton could target this summer Southampton’s summer window is already well underway and the club have made their first signing ahead of the 2019/20 season. The club recently announced the arrival of Mali international Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege for an undisclosed fee. He becomes Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first signing as Southampton manager, after taking over from Mark Hughes back in December 2018. The Saints clearly need to improve their attack after last season, with Djenepo hopefully goals and assists from the wing – his natural position.

Le Tissier sat next to Merson in the Soccer Saturday studio responded: “What?! In the end, that decision, from Southampton ’s perspective wasn’t costly because Danny Ings’ brilliant first-half Whilst Tottenham’s top-four race has taken another blow, the Saints are climbing up the table as only a few

So next season 's Liverpool line- up will be a mixture of the old and new. It also looks to be a team of Klopp will hope the presence of Alisson in goal will spell an end to the goalkeeping and defensive mistakes Virgil van Dijk has been outstanding since he arrived from Southampton back in January.

“I think Matt has struggled a little bit if I’m honest in that position. I’m not sure if he is a long-term replacement for Ryan in that left-back role.”

However, Targett is still only 23-years-old and Le Tissier thinks that perhaps he could be one for the future.

“He might kick on again because he is still young and still has improvement in him.”

Southampton have struggled in the Premier League for the past couple of season and have been fighting against relegation.

This year, when Ralph Hasenhuttl took over from Mark Hughes, he managed to keep them fighting and helped secure their position in the Premier League for next season.

However, a shake around in defence could help the Saints push on further as they look to improve next season.
