As news spread that former Red Sox star David Ortiz had been shot in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night, the baseball world turned to social media to support the player affectionately known as "Big Papi."

According to CNN, Ortiz was shot in the back "by a motorcyclist who approached Ortiz directly."

The local chief of police told Dionisio Soldevila, a reporter from the Dominican Republic, that Ortiz was in stable condition. Ortiz was taken into surgery and told doctors "please don’t let me die. I’m a good man," according to Soldevila.

CNN reported that police have detained multiple people in connection with the shooting.
