The 18-year-old was recently included in the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time and has been linked with moves to Sheffield United, Leeds United, Wolves and Norwich City in recent weeks. Celtic are now considered to be among the favourites in the race to sign Bolton youngster Luca Connell.

According to the Daily Mail, the highly-rated young midfielder is free to leave Bolton for a move abroad for a bargain fee of just £240,000.

Due to compensation rules, similar to the deal that saw Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from Fulham all those years ago, clubs from abroad would only be required to play a small fee to acquire his services this summer.

Connell is expected to leave Bolton in the coming weeks with the club in disarray off the pitch and Celtic are now leading the race to snap him up.

Born in England, Connell is expected to pursue an international career with the Republic of Ireland, having recently been called up to one of their training camps.

It is believed that Celtic’s strong Irish connection could help sway a deal in their favour ahead of other potential suitors.
