Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Kovacic on a permanent deal, which they would be able to do – regardless of their FIFA ban – if they completed the signing before the end of the month.

Kovacic joined Chelsea last summer on a season-long loan from Spanish giants Real Madrid and was a solid force in the midfield for Maurizio Sarri – helping the club win the Europa League and finish 3rd in the Premier League.

However, they will now have to compete with Inter if they want to bring him back to Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis.

Chelsea agree to sign Kovacic from Real Madrid.
Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid, according to the Telegraph‘s Matt Law. The Croatian midfielder spent last season on loan at Stamford Bridge, having fallen out of favour in Madrid. He divided opinion with his performances for the Blues, however, with his impact not as great as many had hoped. Despite this, Chelsea were still keen to tie him down to a permanent deal, not least because of their current two-window transfer ban. Kovacic is still able to complete a move because he was a registered Chelsea player before the ban was inflicted.
