Four hit by pitches — two each way — prompted strong words from the Rockies and Cubs clubhouses Wednesday afternoon. Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado, clearly unhappy with being plunked on the forearm by Cole Hamels in the third inning, said his team's next meeting with Chicago could be "spicy."

The animosity between organizations dates back to several up-and-in pitches to Cubs infielder Kris Bryant in recent years, spilling into this week when Bryant took another two offerings from the Rockies to his body.

In a departure from what baseball fans witnessed a couple of days before, when Josh Donaldson and Joe Musgrove were given quick ejections for a confrontation in Atlanta, umpires did not dismiss anyone from the Rockies-Cubs contest. Longtime MLB pitcher Dan Plesac, who now works as a baseball analyst, appeared on DAZN's "ChangeUp" to support how the teams were allowed to govern themselves Wednesday.

MLB wrap: Rockies complete sweep of Blue Jays, extend winning streak to 8 The Rockies topped the Blue Jays, 5-1, with the help of David Dahl and Nolan Arenado, who both finished 2 for 4 at the plate. “This is what I thought we could do, absolutely,” Arenado said, via the Denver Post. “The way [Antonio Senzatela] pitched today, and with [German] Marquez and [Jon] Gray pitching [well], we thought they would keep us in ballgames. “And I knew our offense would find ways to score runs. And I knew we would play good defense, so I knew we had this capability.” Arenado extended his hitting streak to 13 games. He now has 16 homers on the season. ⬆️⛲️#NolanBeingNolan pic.twitter.

"I liked it. We saw an overreaction from the umpires the other night," Plesac said. "If you look at the way (the Rockies) have pitched Kris Bryant ... as a pitching staff you cannot whether it's by accident or not, you cannot let a team throw up-and-in (to your star player)."

Colorado and Chicago are not scheduled to play again this season, so barring a playoff matchup, Arenado's "spicy" series must wait until next year. By then, perhaps tensions will have cooled down. More likely, though, the star figures in this beef will continue to hold a grudge moving forward, even if it doesn't translate to additional on-field theatrics. Three years of dislike just don't dissipate that fast.
