Southampton looking at Nantes captain Valentin Rongier Southampton are said to be interested in signing Nantes midfielder Valentin Rongier this summer, according to reports in France. A story from Le Foot, relayed by Sport Witness today, suggests the Saints are considering a move for the 24-year-old, who would cost around €15 million. Rongier, who is captain of the Ligue 1 club, has been at Nantes his entire career so far and has made 132 appearances for ‘Les Canaris’, scoring 10 goals. He is versatile and can play in defensive, central or attacking midfield.

The 18-year-old is also catching the eye of Celtic and Chelsea, who, along with the Saints, have scouted the towering defender.

The report suggests that fellow Premier League outfit Watford have even gone as far as making an approach to Nantes for the player, with the centre-back attracting plenty of interest.

Gassama, who stands at 6ft 3in, has yet to turn out for the first-team and has two years left on his current Nantes deal.

The French teenager has qualities that would certainly appeal to Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Gassama is comfortable in playing out from the back, something Hasenhuttl has implemented at St Mary’s following his arrival back in December.

The Austrian is keen to bolster his defensive options this summer and Gassama could certainly prove to be a future first-team star if they can secure his services.

However, following Watford’s approach, the Saints may well need to make a move soon for the teenager, or risk losing him to a Premier League rival.
