Players who could be sold by Southampton this summer

Players who could be sold by Southampton this summer Southampton could be set for a very busy summer of squad management ahead of next season. The Saints managed to avoid relegation this term and finished 16th in the Premier League under Ralph Hasenhuttl. Mark Hughes started the season in charge of the club and endured a terrible first half of the campaign, before being sacked in December. Hasenhuttl then arrived on the scene and impressed in the second-half of the season, keeping Southampton in the top-flight for another season. The Austrian boss will now be looking to make changes to his squad in order to push on next season and progress as a team.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl could sell one of Ryan Bertrand or Matt Targett this Summer, according to reports from the Southampton Daily Echo.

The Austrian boss could be forced to sell some players this window, to fund his endeavours in the transfer market.

Southampton have two starting left backs, with Bertrand and Targett both being called upon last season for the role.

However, according to the report, Hasenhuttl could be likely to sell one of these, with Saints having depth within their youth academy.

Southampton want to hand Targett more games, after he was limited to only 13 Premier League appearances last season, however, this would come at the cost of dropping Bertrand.

Targett has attracted interest from numerous sides including Aston Villa, whilst there are apparently some sides interested in a move for Bertrand.

The defender, who turns 30 this season, only has two years left on his deal at St Mary’s.

For the second successive season, Southampton were somewhat fortunate to avoid relegation from the Premier League. However, this year, the mood is far different. Ralph Hasenhuttl has inspired the supporters to believe in the team once again, and the prospect of a first full campaign under the Austrian is one that many rightly relish. The manager will take charge of his maiden pre-season in charge of the Saints this summer, and it is set to be an intriguing one.
