When Ryan Giggs was appointed Wales manager in early 2018 there had been some speculation that the country’s two biggest names; Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey would have preferred Craig Bellamy over Giggs to lead Wales.

Bellamy was reportedly interviewed for the job but was pipped to it by his ex-Welsh team-mate.

Bellamy for all his faults and immaturity does have a lot of passion for Wales and always gave his all for his national side. Could the same be said for Giggs? In a way, Giggs has something in common with Bellamy. They have both made mistakes in the public eye which may be problematic for them to ever completely move on from.

Would Bellamy have made a better fist of things than Giggs has in the European qualifiers?

Even after Wales’ two losses to Croatia and Hungary, they may still have a chance to qualify. Wales might need the play-off route and if that’s the case they will be hoping for other countries to do them a favour.
