The 17-year-old currently plays for PEC Zwolle, but he is entering the final year of his contract. Although the Reds look like sealing a deal for Van de Berg, there is competition for his signature. Sepp van den Berg looks set to become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer, with the 17-year-old’s arrival imminent.

The Reds have beaten off competition from the likes of Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Bayern Munich for the highly-rated PEC Zwolle centre-back.

Reports in De Telegraaf, via Sport Witness, claim Van den Berg flew to London with his parents ‘in deepest secrecy’ on Monday night, in order to finalise his move.

The youngster reportedly sat down with agents Frank Schouten, Niels van Duinen and John Morris, as he discussed joining the European champions.

Van den Berg was rumoured to be undertaking a medical on Tuesday, but nothing has emerged regarding that yet.

The Dutchman’s official unveiling is not far away, though, and he will go straight into Liverpool’s academy upon arrival.

The hope is that he matures enough to train with the first team sooner rather than later, with great things expected of him.

Sepp van den Berg to miss Tranmere friendly.
New Liverpool signing Sepp van den Berg will miss the Reds’ first pre-season game against Tranmere Rovers, the club’s official website have confirmed. The defender is ineligible to take part on Thursday evening after failing to gain FIFA clearance. The 17-year-old recently completed his transfer from PEC Zwolle, but FIFA rules stipulate that the player is unable to play until he has been granted clearance to do so. Jurgen Klopp snapped up the highly-rated young centre-back last month for a fee of £1.3 million, and his experience at first-team level could help smooth his pathway into Liverpool’s squad for the next season.
