Sheffield United are interested in signing Charlie Austin from Southampton, according to Sky Sports.

The newly-promoted side are keen to secure new recruits following their return to the Premier League, and emerging claims suggest that the 29-year-old striker is on their radar.

Austin fell out of favour at Southampton last season and found himself behind both Danny Ings and Shane Long in the pecking order of forwards under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The former QPR striker has one year remaining on his current contract at St Mary’s Stadium, and it seems the Saints could cash in on the player should they receive an acceptable offer.

Sky Sports reports that Southampton are not willing to let Austin go on the cheap, however. Sheffield United may have to part with a sum worth in the region of £10 million to lure the attacker to Brammal Lane.

Following an unsuccessful season, in which he found the back of the net only twice in the Premier League, it seems the ex-Burnley front man’s three-and-a-half-year tenure at St Mary’s could be about to end.
