Paul Glatzel could miss large chunk of pre-season

Paul Glatzel could miss large chunk of pre-season Liverpool forward Paul Glatzel has been dealt a cruel blow after Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he’d suffered what looks to be a serious injury. Glatzel was part of the Liverpool team that took to the field for the second half of the Reds’ pre-season friendly on Thursday evening but he had to be taken off shortly after assisting Bobby Duncan’s goal. Glatzel hobbled off after he fell awkwardly whilst attempting to close down the Tranmere goalkeeper and Liverpool were forced to send on substitute goalkeeper Daniel Atherton up front for the final 15 minutes of the 6-0 win at Prenton Park.

Liverpool starlet duo Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel will be given the opportunity to impress Jurgen Klopp during pre-season, as reported by Liverpool Echo.

Both 18-years old, the duo kicked off their pre-season campaign tonight against Tranmere Rovers, starting for Liverpool in the second half in a 6-0 win at Prenton Park where Duncan scored the final goal.

Duncan and Glatzel scored more than 60 goals between them last season at Under-18s level, helping the club to the FA Youth Cup title where they beat Manchester City on penalties.

Klopp reveals Glatzel knee injury is 'serious'

Klopp reveals Glatzel knee injury is 'serious' Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Paul Glatzel suffered a “serious” knee injury in Liverpool’s 6-0 pre-season opening win at annual opponents Tranmere Rovers. The 18-year-old striker was introduced at half-time but had to leave the field on 78 minutes after suffering what looked to be an issue with his knee. Klopp has now confirmed Liverpool will be assessing his injury to determine how long he could be facing on the sidelines, telling the official club website: “Unfortunately, Paul Glatzel got seriously injured, which is a shame. He is a wonderful kid, a wonderful player, unbelievable.

The Reds are without a number of first-team forward at the moment due to the African Cup of Nations, with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah all unavailable. With Xherdan Shaqiri also injured, the duo will get their chance to impress the German boss.

Speaking prior to the Tranmere game on Thursday night, Klopp said of the two:

“A lot of them [youngsters] will be part of the US tour, we have to use that because of the number of games we play. We need all of them and that’s nice.”

“Only as an example, Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel: our offensive line that played last year is coming pretty late in joining us in the pre-season, so we have to be creative system-wise and all that stuff, but there will be moments when they have to play.”

“Not only at Tranmere or whatever, but in America as well when we play Borussia Dortmund and all the other guys. So, it’s good and it’s always like this: when you are already in the club, then the door is always open for you to the first team.”

“The thing is you have to go through by yourself – we only open the door, we don’t push you through. So, I’m open, I’m very open for exciting football players and if the boys show up, good for them and good for us.”

Lazio sign Bobby Adekanye following Liverpool exit.
Lazio have snapped up 20-year-old Bobby Adekanye from Liverpool, following a contract breakdown because of a lack of game time for the player, as cited by GOAL. The Italian giants have signed Adekanye on a free transfer upon the expiry of his Liverpool contract. Adekanye was a youth product of the highly exclaimed Barcelona academy and joined the Merseyside outfit in 2015. The Dutch youth international was given future first-team promises upon his arrival at the club which was not given, as he failed to make a single senior team debut for the club.
