The Padres continue to search for a starter.

San Diego is “evaluating Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd as a trade possibility,” according to a report from MLB.com, which cited unidentified league sources. The report added, however, that “serious talks have yet to occur.”

The Tigers “prefer to acquire at least one potential All-Star position player if they move Boyd” and could ask the Padres for Hunter Renfroe or Franmil Reyes in a deal, according to the report.

MLB trade rumors: Tigers want Yankees star Gleyber Torres for Matthew Boyd

MLB trade rumors: Tigers want Yankees star Gleyber Torres for Matthew Boyd Asking for Torres is certainly steep, but it’s what Detroit wants to part with an impact starting pitcher under team control until 2022. According to MLB.com, Detroit’s asking price for Boyd is “believed to include multiple impact prospects, similar to what the White Sox received from the Cubs for Jose Quintana two years ago with similar years of control remaining.

Boyd is in the middle of a career season and holds a 6-6 record with a 3.87 ERA in 18 starts so far. He has struck out 142 and walked 20 in 107 innings pitched.

The Yankees, Astros and Brewers also have been linked to Boyd.

“It’s just noise, right?” Boyd said about the trade rumors last month, via MLB.com. “There’s no action that needs to be taken or anything. It’s just stuff that’s out of my control, and really no stock needs to go into it until something happens. So, there’s nothing I can do.”

Detroit also is willing to listen to offers for Nicholas Castellanos and Shane Greene, along with “virtually any veteran on its roster,” according to MLB Network.

“The guys that should be worried are the guys that no one is interested in,” Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said in June. “So, when people care, and your name is being thrown around, it ought to flatter you. That’s what I throw out there. Just be happy that someone wants you in this game.”

The Tigers are well out of playoff contention with a 28-57 record. The Padres, meanwhile, entered the All-Star break two games behind the Phillies for the second National League wild-card spot. They've also reportedly inquired about Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard.

MLB trade rumors: Cubs looking to add leadoff hitter, reliever before deadline.
The Cubs entered play Monday in first place of the National League Central with a 50-43 record. They hold a 2 1/2 game lead over the Brewers. Chicago is considering all of its options, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told reporters earlier this month. "If you go on a tear and you find yourselves with a four-or five-game lead, that puts you in a really aggressive posture as buyers,” Epstein said, via MLB.com. “It doesn't work this way, but in your mind, you want to try to finish off the division if you can.
