Lampard signs Chelsea contract with announcement edging closer

Lampard signs Chelsea contract with announcement edging closer Frank Lampard has reportedly signed his contract to take over at Chelsea, with an official announcement edging ever closer. According to Pete O’Rourke, Lampard has finally put pen to paper as he prepares to take the Chelsea job in what will only be his second season in management. Derby County confirmed last week that they had allowed Lampard to hold talks with Chelsea over the vacant job. It was also revealed this morning that he had been excused from pre-season training, with the Derby players returning from their holidays on Monday. The latest reports suggest that it is just a matter of time before the club’s former midfielder is unveiled as their new manager.

Chelsea round off their tour of Ireland with a game against St Patrick’s Athletic, who currently sit fourth in the Irish Premier Division.

Wednesday’s far from inspiring draw with Bohemians presented new manager Frank Lampard with a host of issues, that he will have to iron out before the resumption of the new season in just under a month. Whilst fitness and personnel certainly played a part in Chelsea’s performance, it was clear to many onlookers that yet another change in tactic could cause disruptions to a team who had only just started to get to grips with previous manager Maurizio Sarri’s high pressing possession based system dubbed ‘Sarriball’.

Chelsea beaten to signing of exciting youngster Edozie

Chelsea beaten to signing of exciting youngster Edozie Chelsea have missed out on the signing of teenager Samuel Edozie, with Manchester City snapping him up instead. That’s according to the Mirror, who have confirmed that Edozie has joined the Premier League champions from Millwall. The deal is thought to be worth a minimum of £1 million, despite the 16-year-old’s contract expiring. As well as Chelsea, it is believed Liverpool and Arsenal were also keeping a close eye on Edozie. The Nigerian winger will head into City’s much-acclaimed academy, where he will look to rise through the ranks and eventually represent Pep Guardiola’s side.

More senior players have since returned to training and could well feature for the Blues, although with a packed schedule of pre-season fixtures ahead Lampard may use the game as an opportunity to have one last look at some of the youngsters who impressed against Bohemians.

St Patrick’s season is well underway but they will still be reeling from defeat in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier against IFK Norrkoping, and could themselves field a weakened squad in preparation for the second leg.
