Newcastle make official approach for Steve Bruce - is it a good move? Newcastle have made an official approach for Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce, according to Sky Sports News, but how should fans react? It’s fair to say that the response to the Bruce links have not been positive in the North East, for a number of reasons. Firstly, his Sunderland connections won’t exactly endear himself to Newcastle fans in the first place, so we’re already off to a bad start. Then his recent records are not particularly inspiring. He’s not been a major success at Sunderland and he started well at Hull but faded away.

It was understood that Bruce hoped the Owls and Newcastle could reach a compromise so he could manage his boyhood club. The former Hull gaffer took charge of Wednesday's 3-1 pre-season friendly win against Lincoln over the weekend in which he was confronted by a furious fan.

Former Lyon manager Bruno Genesio has travelled to England for talks with Newcastle, but would he be better than Steve Bruce?

According to Le Progres, via Get French Football News, is currently in England as he appears set to take over the Premier League side.

The report claims that Newcastle have prepared a four-year contract for the French boss, despite strong links to Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce.

Newcastle 'set to appoint Steve Bruce as new boss' and could announce his appointment before weekend so he can join squad on tour of China The Telegraph claim talks are at an advanced stage and that Bruce could be announced as the Magpies' new boss as early as Friday. It is understood that Newcastle will have to pay in the region of £1million to release Bruce from his current contract, although no agreement between the two clubs is in place. Sportsmail understands Bruce is set to travel to Tyneside on Thursday ahead of the deal being signed in the next 48 hours. Newcastle hope to iron out the remaining details as quickly as possible and will endeavour to ensure Bruce is able to meet the players for the first time in China next week.

That figure is far more than Ashley expected and he would have to stump up even more for Bruce ’s coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence. That takes the whole package closer to £6m. With wages on top, the final bill will dwarf the £6m Toon owner Ashley offered Benitez to sign a new deal

So, who should the club be bringing in? Bruce ended the season strongly with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, whilst Genesio left Lyon after finishing 3rd in Ligue 1.

Genesio spent four years with Lyon in France, finishing 2nd, 3rd, 3rd and 3rd in consecutive seasons. Bruce, meanwhile, was sacked by Championship outfit Aston Villa towards the start of last season, before joining Sheffield Wednesday earlier this year.

Looking at the recent achievements of the two managers, and what Newcastle need next season, it does seem as though Genesio is a far superior option to Bruce.

If the deal does go through, it could be a great bit of business from Newcastle, after losing Rafa Benitez earlier this summer.
