A group of former Manchester United players are opening a flexible university which will allow students to work alongside their studies.

Football stars Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt - from Manchester United's famous "Class of 92" - are behind the programme.

University Academy 92, which will open in September, gives students the option to take four-hour lectures in the morning or the afternoon for four days a week.

They say the timetable will give students the opportunity to work in their chosen careers without sacrificing their studies.

The degrees will be awarded by Lancaster University and include courses in accounting, business studies, sport and media studies.

Gary Neville said: "Our aim is that university students will of course leave with an academic qualification, but also a range of skills such as how to deal with pressure, an understanding of finance, leadership, presentational skills and also how to maintain a healthy body and mind.

"In other words the complete package to succeed in the workplace."

According to the university's website, the curriculum will be "inspired by the experience and connections of the Class of 92".

Brainchild of Gary Neville and ex-teammates will offer courses designed to ‘enhance life skills as well as employability.

It will be situated in a former Kellogg's site near Manchester United's training ground.

Each student will have access to their own personal development coach, inspired by the mentors the players had at the start of their careers, who included youth coach Eric Harrison and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The initial intake in September will be about 300 but the university hopes to take on 6,000 in future.
