Former England netball coach Tracey Neville has revealed she suffered a miscarriage the day after she coached her team to Commonwealth gold.

The 42-year-old, who stepped down as England head coach after overseeing their third-place finish at the World Cup in July, led the Roses to their first major title in 2018 as they edged out hosts Australia 52-51 in a dramatic final.

'I had a miscarriage and then I went into a three-hour media fest to celebrate what is something that I'd been waiting something like 30 years for,' she said.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, she continued: 'You think to yourself: 'This can't be right.' You see other ladies who have been through traumatic situations take time off work, but I just wasn't willing to do that.

'This was my family, this was my commitment. I didn't want to miss this journey that the Roses were on because, in a way - and it's awful to say - the Roses were my priority.'

The 42-year-old, who has been succeeded in the England job by Jess Thirlby, announced earlier this month that she was pregnant with her partner Michael Timmins.

She is now hoping to take a break, but may return to coaching in the future.

Her last game in charge of the Roses came amid the ecstasy and exhaustion of beating South Africa at the World Cup in July. But there was an undeniable feeling in the Roses camp that this was the end of an era for England Netball.

In her interview with the BBC, Neville spoke of how she made the decision to step down as head coach months before the World Cup - having suffered another miscarriage at Christmas.

Neville, who is the sister of former Manchester United footballers Gary and Phil, told her team on a group phone call. They were very supportive of the decision she added, saying: 'They knew how much Michael meant to me and my family.'

Jess Thirlby will now act as head coach for the Roses following the departure of Neville.

'This is a great time to be taking on the role as we head into Netball's exciting next chapter. My focus will be to harness and build upon the momentum and solid foundation gained over the past four years.

'I expect the look and feel of the team to change as some players may begin to consider hanging up their netball trainers following the World Cup, but I am excited to invest in and develop the amazing new talent that is coming through.'

Thirlby, who competed alongside Neville at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, has three years before England defend their title in high-profile circumstances in Birmingham.
