Kyle Edmund has his status as British number one after suffering a sixth consecutive defeat at the Shanghai Masters.

The 24-year-old's dismal run of form continued as he fell to a 6-4 7-6 (3) loss to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who took advantage of his only break point of the match in the fifth game of the first set.

While Dan Evans, who lost in Shanghai qualifying, is set to leapfrog Edmund to become British number one, Cameron Norrie also stands a chance after another win in China.

Qualifier Norrie beat experienced Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-5 6-2 but next faces a difficult test against US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev.

The star started working solely with Hilton after ending his partnership with Swede Freddie Rosengren in February, who helped him reach the Australian Open semi-finals last year. 

British coach Colin Beecher, who is currently travelling with compatriot Dan Evans in China, will also support Edmund for the rest of the Asian swing in Beijing and Shanghai.

Edmund slumps to eighth successive loss .
Kyle Edmund slumped to an eighth successive loss on the ATP Tour as he was beaten by Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the Erste Bank Open. Edmund, who was a notable absentee from the Great Britain squad for the Davis Cup finals named earlier on Monday, was beaten 3-6 6-3 6-4 by the third seed in Vienna.
