At the Australian Open in January this year, the tournament organisers practically retired Andy Murray.

There was an emotional on-court interview with former coach Mark Petchey, a montage of his best moments and tributes on the big screen from some of the greatest stars in tennis history.

MIKE DICKSON: Andy Murray is no normal athlete... his remarkable comeback to win the European Open will rank alongside his best victories

MIKE DICKSON: Andy Murray is no normal athlete... his remarkable comeback to win the European Open will rank alongside his best victories MIKE DICKSON: Having witnessed Andy Murray emerge from a Scottish backwater to break the mould of underachieving British tennis I should have known better.  Having seen him break countless opponents over the years by sheer force of will I should have realised that, when his face creased into tears during that famous press conference at the Australian Open, he was not entirely finished, even though he suggested so himself.

Andy Murray is not the youngest of the tennis supergroup known as the Big Four. What mattered most was all in there: the sensitivity, the humanity, the competitive fire reduced to anguish at not being able to solve his hip problem despite all the medical expertise, financial resources and iron will at his

Bob Bryan says Andy Murray ‘has been watching me like a hawk’, as the American had hip surgery in August and on Wednesday won a first-round doubles match alongside his brother Mike.

I was at Melbourne Park and had seen Murray hobbling at times from his car to the practice court, such was the chronic pain he was suffering.

(AP Photo/Francisco Seco) It was clear at that stage a controversial procedure called the "Birmingham Hip" - a halfway house to a full hip replacement - was the only possible route back to the elite ranks.

But how could somebody undergo surgery to cement a metal socket into their hip joint and return to play a game which is so demanding on every part of the body?

In only his seventh singles event since returning after surgery, he has won the European Open. The look of disbelief as he removed a sweat-sodden baseball cap and looked to his box and coach, Jamie Delgado, suggested Murray could hardly fathom how he had done it either.

This was, he said, one of his greatest victories and it must be treated that way. In 2012, he became the first Briton to win an Olympic gold in tennis singles since 1908 and the next year became the first British man since Fred Perry to win Wimbledon.

By beating his old foe Stan Wawrinka in Antwerp he has made history again. Nobody has ever returned from having such a serious hip operation and won an ATP singles title.

As the pain in his hip worsened over the past three years to the point he struggled to tie his shoelaces, Murray spent a great deal of time studying the career of American tennis player, Bob Bryan, who also underwent the Birmingham Hip procedure and returned to win a grand slam title.

But that was in doubles, a vastly different challenge to singles where players often spend four hours at a time sprinting around the court chasing down every ball.

This was a victory for sheer bloody mindedness, not just in Belgium but over the last nine months.

Andy Murray says that his Queen's doubles title is one of the most special of his career, as it was completely unexpected. “I’ve won with a metal hip . Murray could have easily retired having achieved every major accolade in the game and amassed a fortune of many millions, all while starting a young family with wife, Kim. But instead he has gritted his way through a gruelling recovery process.

At first he was restricted to low impact rehab work, sometimes walking on an anti-gravity treadmill, swimming or hitting balls at a brick wall from a static position. It was torture for a competitive animal like Murray.

But he stuck it out, returning to a full size court in April, quicker than many of his support team hoped. In June he won the doubles title at Queens Club alongside Feliciano Lopez but returning to the pinnacle of the game in singles has always been the aim for the 32-year-old.

It is a simply phenomenal achievement and one which his brother, Jamie, perhaps summed up most effectively. He tweeted: "Andy ******* Murray."

The man with a metal hip and an iron will has pulled off his most surprising victory to date and you certainly wouldn't bet against him lifting more trophies in the future.
