The Irish FA has confirmed that Michael O’Neill is leaving his role as Northern Ireland manager.

O'Neill will join Stoke City with immediate affect with the 50-year-old expected to sign a four-year deal with the Championship club.

It is understood the 50-year-old will almost double his £750,000 salary with the IFA.

And it has been confirmed that O'Neill will remain in charge of Northern Ireland for the remaining two Euro 2020 qualifiers AND any potential Euro 2020 play-off next year.

The Irish FA says Championship strugglers Stoke City want to speak to Northern Ireland boss Michael O ' Neill about their managerial vacancy. Shortly after dismissing Jones, Stoke asked to talk to Alex Neil , manager of Preston North End, but the request was turned down by their Championship rivals.

The IFA was first approached by Stoke on Wednesday night to speak to O'Neill about their vacant manager’s position, and the Potters subsequently met compensation requirements in his contract which enabled them to enter talks.

Irish FA Chief Executive Patrick Nelson said: “We reluctantly agreed to allow Stoke to talk to Michael after they met the compensation requirements. Michael has now agreed terms with the EFL Championship club.

“Naturally, we are extremely disappointed that Michael is leaving us, however we are delighted all parties have agreed Michael will be in charge of the Northern Ireland team for the games against Netherlands and Germany and potential Euro 2020 play-off matches next March.
