Arsene Wenger has been appointed FIFA's new chief of global football development.

The former Arsenal manager was recently reported to be a target for the vacant managerial role at Bayern Munich but they have instead put Hans Dieter Flick in charge on a temporary basis.

And Wenger has now decided to take up a post at governing body FIFA instead.

It is the first role that Wenger has taken on since he left the Gunners at the end of the 2017-18 season.

The 70-year-old's job will involve driving the growth and development of football around the world and will be the leading authority for technical issues and have a huge part to play in potential changes to the laws of the game.

Wenger will also be the chairman of the FIFA Technical Study Group, which analyses international tournaments.

The Frenchman will also be tasked with educating coaches, offering former players a route into management and helping with the transition from playing to coaching.

Wenger said: 'I very much look forward to taking on this extremely important challenge, not only because I have always been interested in analysing football from a broader perspective but also because FIFA's mission as world football's governing body is truly global. 

'I believe that the new FIFA we have seen emerging in recent years has the sport itself at the very heart of its objectives and is determined to develop the game in its many different components.
