As Glenn Tamplin strode into the dugout for the first time as Romford boss, waiting for him in the opposition technical area was another Essex celebrity with grand ambitions for his football club.

Pop star and presenter Olly Murs has been involved as a director at Coggeshall for more than a year, seeing his side flying high in the Isthmian League North Division.

While Murs is low-key in his approach, Tamplin has made plenty of noise on his return to the game after leaving Billericay in September.

After confirming the takeover on Wednesday, within 24 hours controversial millionaire Tamplin had sacked the coaching staff, appointed himself as boss, removed the entire playing squad, held trials for a new one and signed 21 players.

There was more change to come, with Tamplin sending home a further 12 players on the eve of the match for being late - a game that was almost called off due to waterlogged pitch.

Such is the speed of transition that Romford's squad list in the matchday programme was left blank.

Derek, a volunteer of 15 years, summed up the positivity felt by those at the club towards Tamplin, who has offered unimaginable riches to his new side. He was, as were most, a little baffled by the sudden attention.

A new ground, a permanent home, relative success and recognition beyond their county borders all seem inevitable now.

Still, there have been casualties. Chairman Steve Gardner, who will remain on the club board as alongside vice-chairman Colin Ewenson, admitted that letting Paul Martin, boss of the club for 15 years and affectionately known as 'Magic', go was the toughest part of the takeover but insisted it had to be done for the good of the club.

For Tamplin's part, he insisted only by being manager himself could he recruit the standard of player required. Many have come in on cheap loan deals from higher divisions already.

He is also adamant that his involvement is not for personal aggrandizement.

He told Sportsmail: 'This is not about me, it is about the community. We don’t keep it going, we get bigger. We've now got to grow it. It is very easy to start something.

Having been run within their means for several years, Romford posted a loss last season despite not paying their players or coaching staff. In that context, Tamplin's involvement is a shot at something more than just surviving.

While they are the division's basement team, the problems run deeper than that. The club have been nomadic for many years, and since the start of the season have played seven miles down the road in a groundshare with Brentwood Town.

Returning home is a key part of the plan, but Tamplin estimates it will be at least 18 months and another season-and-a-half before the new ground is built.

Chairman Gardner revealed he had previously held talks with Tamplin before the steel company owner invested in Billericay, but talks restarted shortly after he left the club.

Having purchased Billericay in 2017 and signed former Premier League stars Paul Konchesky, Jermaine Pennant and Jamie O'Hara, Tamplin guided Billericay from the Ryman Premier into National League South and would appear well versed to do the same slightly further west.

At times his previous project appeared set to veer out of control; the wage bill reached a monstrous £30,000-a-week and Tamplin admits he put the future of his children at risk by taking out bridging loans to cover the costs.

Tamplin describes leaving the club in January as tough but necessary after abuse towards his son and family became unbearable.

'I love Billericay, maybe I took things to heart too much but I watched my son cry and it broke something in me,' he said.

'I walked away and left the club very sustainable with four good businessmen in charge.'

In Romford, Tamplin has at last found another challenge to occupy his thoughts.

For any team rooted to the foot of the table after 12 games with such wholesale personnel changes, survival would be ambitious enough. But Tamplin is deadly serious when he insists the club can make up the 16-point deficit to the play-off places.

Tamplin's time in football has been controversial to say the least, from sacking and re-hiring himself in the space of three days to allegations of drug use at his former club, but Gardner insisted the idea of seeing Romford rise up the leagues was worth any element of risk.

'On Twitter, I just block, block, block. I don't see the negatives. My record speaks for itself.'

There is certainly a sense of unfinished business with Tamplin, who rode into Billericay with a grand vision of taking the club from non-league to the football league. While that did not happen, here is his second chance.

Still, this was quite the start.

Tamplin has drawn on in extensive contacts in the game to assemble this side, drawing players from Bromley, Billericay and beyond with barely two days' notice.

What can't be doubted is his ability to draw a crowd. Fans started arriving a full two hours before kick-off, and the fur coats and tight fades poured in through the gate long after the game started.

In total, 524 people from Essex and beyond showed up, which was always likely with free entry and a voucher for a free drink - a cost Tamplin estimates at around £12 per person.

Their last home league game, a 3-3 draw against Soham Town Rangers, drew a crowd of just 82.

How coincidental it was that Tamplin's first game came during the international break against a side with their own celebrity backer depends on how cynical you are.

Some of the bumper turnout were longtime supporters. Others were Premier League regulars drawn by the national attention the takeover has brought. A certain number seemed to be exclusively Glenn Tamplin fans, crowding as close to him in the dugout as possible and imparting their own thoughts.

For his part, Tamplin was never less than vocal on the sidelines, engaging in chat with the fans behind his dugout and encouraging his new charges in equal measure.

There was plenty of Essex royalty on display, with Murs in one dugout and TV presenter Jeff Brazier strolling around pitchside among the crowd.

The optimism among the supporters spread to the pitch too, this hastily-assembled squad taking a welcome lead through former Arsenal youngster Philip Roberts on 10 minutes.

That was as good as it got, Ross Wall's 29th-minute effort sparking a six-minute burst that would seal the game with Euin McKeown and Tevan Allan breaking Romford hearts.

" First they came " is the poetic form of a prose post-war confession first made in German in 1946 by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the cowardice of German intellectuals and certain clergy (including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself)

To their credit, Romford came back fighting after the break, in part inspired by Tamplin's switch to an unusual and ambitious 3-3-4 system. Freddy Moncur, son of West Ham legend John, would pull one back to spark hopes but there was to be no equaliser.

There was a lot of exuberance on the touchline, with Tamplin deciding to make all three substitions inside half an hour.

Goalscorer Moncur admitted there was plenty more to do after minimal preparation time.

The midfielder said: 'We had one session on Thursday and some were new coming in today. Some boys didn't know each other's names before kick-off. We have a full week of training now and no doubt Glenn will bring more players in.'

a man in a blue uniform holding a football ball: Freddy Moncur made a goalscoring debut for Romford and is optimistic for the future © Provided by Associated Newspapers Limited Freddy Moncur made a goalscoring debut for Romford and is optimistic for the future

Moncur had a simple answer when it came to Tamplin.

'It's the passion in his voice and the ambition the man has got,' he says when asked about his manager's main attributes.

'He is a born winner, whenever he gets involved in clubs, look at Billericay, he only takes them in the right direction. I couldn't wait to get onboard and play for him.

'I just thought I want to be a part of this.'

Tamplin is already moving on to refining his squad and admitted several of the team who played Coggeshall have played their first and last game for the club.

For all his insistence that Romford is an entirely new project, Tamplin clearly yearns for some of the magic he had at Billericay.

On Sunday he confirmed that five players from his former club have made the move to Romford.

Long after the final whistle, the volunteers were still at work, packing away and cleaning up after the biggest crowd the club have seen for a long time.

Derek gathered up the corner flags, while the chairman's son led a group of friends with binbags to clear up plates and cups left behind.

Amy and Amy, the team manning the snack bar, thought things might be busier than usual and brought in an extra volunteer as well as buying double the usual stock – but still sold out.

Tamplin remained busy after the end of the match, offering his number and the promise of trials to several footballers who had turned up to the game in hope of securing a new club.

For all Murs’ quiet achievement, one thing that is clear at the start of this new era is that Tamplin will, for better or worse, do things his way.

'What I can guarantee is if we don’t get promoted this season we will get promoted next season, just like we did at Billericay.

'We are going to have a go and give it a try.'
