Australian captain Tim Paine has refuted suggestions of poor sportsmanship from teammate David Warner, after the opener was pinged five runs on the fourth day of the third Test against the Black Caps.

Umpire Aleem Dar called Warner for causing damage to a protected zone on the SCG pitch during Australia's second innings on Monday.

The contentious call came as Warner had just posted his third ton of the summer, as he and partner at the crease Marnus Labuschagne looked to further put a dent in the Black Caps.

Labuschagne had already been issued a warning by Dar for a similar incident, however the umpire wasn't as forgiving to Warner, who was picked up on the stump mic protesting the decision.

Speaking after the Aussies sealed a 3-0 sweep of their cross-Tasman rivals, Paine downplayed the incident and insisted there was no intention from Warner.

“Personally I didn’t see too much in it and certainly it wasn’t David trying to do that on purpose or a directive from our side,” Paine said post-match.

However, Warner was still baffled by the penalty after the match, and called out Dar's reaction when the Aussie right-hander approached him to query the call.

“Marnus got warned then I all of a sudden took a couple of strides down the wicket, as I have done in every game I’ve ever played in my career, and Aleem just decided to get on the front foot and penalise us,” Warner told ABC Grandstand.
