Barcelona are on the verge of another crisis as the playing squad and board enter tense talks over a wage cut amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

A number of clubs across Europe have been forced to dramatically cut the wages of their players owing to financial difficulties caused by the spread of the deadly disease. 

According to AS, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is looking to strike a deal with his star players over a reduced salary. Spanish football clubs have been asked to enter a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) to guarantee their economic futures.

The standard wage cut rate is 70%, although Barcelona's players have reportedly baulked at that proposal. Bartomeu is working on striking a more favourable deal with the playing squad, believed to be a cut that does not exceed 50%. 

Even so, members of the Barcelona squad are said to be unhappy with the proposal, sparking yet more rumblings in the ranks of the Catalonian club.

Calls between players and board members have been made over the past week, although senior members of the squad appear unwilling to reach a compromise at present.

However, Bartomeu is keen to urge calmness among the players, reassuring them that the measures are only temporary and that normality will resume sooner rather than later.

It follows from what is proving to be a financially turbulent time for clubs across the continent as almost all football comes to a halt. The decimation of the current season has left the future of clubs in limbo, with a number asking players to take a wage cut in order to keep their clubs afloat.
