The University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) officially protested after the police unwittingly used a of its stadiums to gather and sort of demonstrators arrested for having broken the curfew.

"We are disturbed by reports that the Jackie Robinson stadium was used as an" open-air prison "to screen protesters," the university wrote in a statement sent to AFP on Wednesday.

"It was done without UCLA having knowledge of it or giving its permission", continues UCLA, a tenant of the stadium which belongs to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. "The Los Angeles police emptied the premises and we informed them that we would not allow them to be used again as a sorting center," said the university.

UCLA was alerted by several dozen of its teachers who, in an open letter, denounced these police actions after the demonstrations, sometimes violent on Monday evening, in reaction to the death of the African-American George Floyd, who was asphyxiated in Minneapolis by the knee of a white policeman.

Contacted by AFP, the police of Los Angeles had not reacted Wednesday. The number of arrested protesters who have been brought to the stadium is not known at this time.

According to the letter from the academics, "the demonstrators, arrested for violating a curfew in the center of Los Angeles (about 20 km from the stadium, note) were massaged in buses" by the police and escorted to 'at the Jackie Robinson stadium without being informed of their destination.

They were detained on these buses "for five to six hours, without access to toilets, food, water, information or medical care," say the signatories of the letter.

Ironically, Jackie Robinson, who gave his name to the stadium, was the first black player to enter the American baseball championship in 1947, putting an end to the racial segregation that had hitherto prevailed in this sport.

UCLA teachers also claim that the police did not comply with the health protection regulations against the Covid-19, deliberately piling up "the demonstrators in the buses and sometimes refraining from wearing a mask.
